Ok I'm not even a newbie, I don't even goto school till this Sunday. One of the things to bring was a flashlight. So in my infinite wisdom I figured instead of just getting a belt holster light might as well get something that I may actually need in the dead of night in the middle of nowhere. So I opted for the 3D LED mag. Now Ive never had much with LED's, but I figured I could give it a shot. For 30 bucks I'm not breaking the bank. Got home and tested it at night (live on a farm in bumble####) and well I think i can land planes with this thing. The problem is in close quarters its too bright... way too much glare. How often do you use a flashlight for close quarters? Or is it more of a safety device? In which case I guess I got the right thing.

I have found for pretrip and basic use, the 2 AA cel Maglite LED is great. Comes with a belt holster as well. For awesome light, with variable brightness settings, check out surefire. Be ready to pay tho.

For school use most likely to check the 5th wheel/kingpin.

Figured for school it wouldn't be used much if at all, just making sure we had one, was more thinking down the road. Common times actual drivers in actual situations use there light. The post Baack pointed me to helped.

In my opinion brighter is always better. i got a maglite triple D because i had excess credit card reward points. Anyways, you can always aim it slightly askew if there's too much glare in close quarters.

I have a 3D Maglite as well. It's great for doing pretrips at night, especially when checking fluid levels. You can also use it for a source of light in the truck if needed.

Fortunately for me, I found a 2nd Maglite at P&G in GA. It looked like it was run over but still in excellent condition. Unfortunately, when I was throwing out the shattered bulb, the little piece that keeps the bulb screwed in also went with it, and it was like $10 to replace. I just threw it in the trash. :(

That three or five D Maglight or Kellight is a very good tool to have with you. In addition to putting out quite a bit of light, it can be handy to have if uh, things go "south" while you are checking out your rig. But be warned that if used for other than defense, it is considered a "deadly weapon."

If you swing it near someone's nose, they'll change their attitude in a hurry.

You can NEVER have too bright of a light.
