Quick question for you guys that haul equipment, specifically loaders and things with attachments. Does each attachment need its own chain? We have a chain over the front axle and a chain over the rear/pto area. The loader has a front end bucket and a rear box scraper. Do the bucket and scraper need to be chained as well? Are the exceptions? Is there a quick legal reference for all this?

    Thanks!

Yes, the attachments need to be chained. Are you hauling this locally, or interstate? It doesn't change what's legal so much as what you might get away with. If you're hauling interstate, you'd be better to go two chains per axle - just a CYA.

I've never done it like that. Cross chain both ends of the machine & roll with it. Make sure the scraper & bucket are down on the deck (Make sure the combined working load limit of the securement devices is at least 50% of the weight of the cargo)

Look at the guys hauling backhoes & excavators around where you are & see how they do it.

Ever get pulled by the DOT while having it like that? I'm betting not...

Anything that can possibly move must be chained down. Backhoe booms, Manlift booms, Loader buckets, Excavator buckets.....etc. MUST be chained!

If you get stopped with it not chained and the cop spots it, You'll get a citation for an unsecured load.

The rules have changed since then...It's a big deal now if you don't chain the booms down.

I agree. A front end loader bucket and a box scraper mounted on a 3 point hitch aint gonna move.

It's not against the law to over-secure anything either. I saw a Mexican at Sierra Pacific in Arcata last week with 17 straps on a load that I would have used 9 on.

I see a lot of that too....I never say anything about oversecurement but if I see a guy UNDERsecuring a load, I'll say something to him about it.

Always best to err on the side of caution, plain and simple.
