I think the guys are going to want more information. Are you hauling for yourself? Or are you a driver for an O/O? Etc.
-
As long as you are staying busy and getting good paying loads or multiple less paying loads in per week then 28% is pretty good for hauling steel. Example Nucor by me pays $.90 per 100 so a load going over to Ohio 172 miles pays $315 give or take a little. You making 28% of the load couldn't live off that unless you ran loaded over and back for total of 2 loads per day at 5 days per week.

Sorry about the vague post. This position would be as a company driver, anywhere from 2- to 6-axle trlrs, regional runs from MI with some to the SE, and home maybe twice a week (or so they say). As i type this, I'm realizing there's a whole lot i don't know about flatbeds OR hauling steel. I used to run reefers OTR and have recently been doing dry van local runs. I was just wondering if the 25-28/load is equivalent to the .28 cpm they pay new drivers. Also, is the work, risk/reward, etc worth it with flatbeds?

it would be good pay,but kinda confuses me,are you being offered this with no flatbed experience and up to 6 axle trailers? is this a MI company?
MJ1657 Thanks this. -
Yes, MI based company. I've driven flatbeds before but only in a pinch. The way i understand it, i would start out with 2-axle trlrs and increase with more experience. Also they would "train" me on raising/lowering and how to drive with the additional axles. I guess the problem I'm having might be with how some (too many?) companies prey on drivers' ignorance. i can do the work, i just don't want to accept less than the job should pay because i didn't know any better. Only to find out later that i screwed myself by listening to the company. I've heard too many bad stories. If some of you with experience in this area believe 28% is a fair and living wage, then I'll go with it.

Tarp pay, will you have to drag rags for this?
Delay pay? Sometimes steel shippers and receivers are a little slow, how much is 25%-28% of good money? Loading 70 foot beams on a stretch out of Huger S.C. sometimes took 5 hours from appointment time to BOL in my hands. Petersburg Va was so slow you could draw chalk lines and think the loaders were dead.
Some peoples good money is another poverty level.critters and Mommas_money_maker Thank this. -
