Good day!
I currently drive for Werner. Been with them almost 4 months. Have overall about 7 months of recent otr experience and 5 yrs with my cdl.
Looking to get on with another company, barely making 2k miles a week here which is only $400 to $500 after taxes, etc.
Was looking at Knight transportation for refrigerated (have some experience) or Melton truck lines to run flatbed (no experience).
Don't mind hard work, just looking to run more miles a week while I continue to build my experience and later down the road jump onto a smaller company (non mega carrier)
Would like to hear some pros and cons and if you had to choose one of these companies, who would you go with.
Thanks.
Flatbed or Reefer?

You have plenty of experience for several good outfits:
Freymiller
Abilene Motor Express
Coast to coast running with these companies.
Put your location on your profile. -
Melton pays way better than what you're making
Lepton1 Thanks this. -
Flatbed, pulled dry box and reefer, with reefer it's late night pick up and delivery, dry box kinda the same. Switched to flatbed and have never regretted it. Flatbedding is mostly done in the daytime, delivery and pickup. Plus, since I went Flatbed, the money's been MUCH better. In the yard Friday afternoon and off till Monday morning. Did $72,000 last year, this year at the new outfit I'm at, should do 80,000 plus. Get some bedding experience and door's will open.

Appreciate the feedback. I live in Miami, Florida so not a lot of companies hire from down here.
I'm kinda leaning towards flatbed, just looks intimidating I guess.speedyk Thanks this. -
It's not as hard as it looks. It's good exercise/ good break from sitting all day.
Personally, I liked hauling equipment. Chaining was kind of fun for me. Hauling lumber and tarping it then securing the tarp with 10,000 bungees- not as much.RedRover, speedyk, thatbeardedguy and 1 other person Thank this. -
Flatbed, try Melton Truck Lines or Celadon flatbed division or CT Transportation.

Flatbed will open up doors for heavy haul if that's something you are inclined to do. Reefer will be reefer.
Don't allow the intimidation factor prevent you from getting into flatbed. Melton will give you a securement class. Use the flatbed forum as another learning tool. I switched from dry van to flatbed about 16 months ago, going with a small outfit that had two "ride alongs" as training, but relied heavily on the flatbed forum and help from other drivers to get me through. When in doubt I would take pictures and text them to other drivers or dispatch (who all had experience) to get advice. Now I am one of those receiving requests for advice. You are always learning and always a rookie at securing something in this part of trucking. You will find that other drivers are really helpful.thatbeardedguy Thanks this.
