So here's my dilemma. I have finally got away from van freight after making that mistake 4mo ago. So Fri morning I was supposed to pick up a 53ft step here in NC. Welp, they (the account rep) screwed up and reserved a flatbed for me. I pitched a fit because I came all the way out here to NC to get the trailer. Their solution was that they have 2 steps coming in tomorrow, 1 is reserved for me.

I took the 53ft flatbed in the meantime hoping I could snag a short haul over the weekend, but it didn't happen.

After thinking this over, do I really want the stepdeck? Freight is not as easy to get for it, although it does pay better. Is the flatbed a better choice?

I am not looking to be OTR all the time doing long ### hauls. Not to say that when a load pays properly, I wont take it.

I either need y'all to tell me Im being crazy and to get the step because I'll be fine freight wise or keep the flatbed and stick to hauling slightly cheaper but more abundant freight.

What kind of freight do u have most access to with the company ur going with ? Stepdeck is good for light equipment and picking up some partial ltl loads and putting together a monster payday..especially if its a SD with ramps. But if ur just gonna haul palletized stuff and loaded to gross most the times , a flatbed would be easier to keep loaded and scale out to gross and more options to keep loaded. Just my opinon

I'd find out what's in demand in the areas I plan to run in and get that particular trailer type if I were you.

So the new company is very small and I have free reign over everything I do. I want to haul lighter, more specialized freight. Im good at it. 3 1/2yrs of heavy construction materials just kinda wore me down.

What Im not great at yet is finding that freight. Be it spot market/load board or direct customers.

For instance, Im sitting outside Greensboro NC right now. I have no clue what I can haul out of here on a stepdeck. I know I can get a flatbed load with minimal problems though. But this isn't an area Im going spend a lot of time in I don't think.

Stepdeck there's a lot less loads you can haul but you can get occasionally lucky with a high paying specialized load.

    I've done both.

I’m yet to see those good paying stepdeck loads. It is a discount flatbed that costs more to buy. And than you just watch those flatbed postings with remarks „no stepdecks”, even if a load could easily go on it brokers often don’t want to book you on it, they’d rather get a „real flatbed”.

I have a flatbed so I say go with a stepdeck so there's less loads you can steal from me.

what do you want to do? No trailer will ever be perfect for every area. You’d need every trailer in your driveway to always be set up to do that. I pull a step, I sit a lot at home at least waiting for good loads, I like putting multiple loads together. If you want to stay loaded and rolling hauling anything stay with a flatbed, if you want to wait on juicy stuff and work smarter not harder and aren’t afraid to work go with a step deck. That’s my opinion.
