From reading these threads, I'm more confused than a cow on astro-turf! I am definitely going to a Community College in Southwest Ohio to get my CDL after I retire from the Medical Field. I have always wanted to drive but I cannot decide to go flatbed or tanker. I plan on getting all the endorsement(twic, haz mat, passport) but reading these threads it appears tanking is more steady year round work; and I want to eventually move to Florida or Texas. Right now it appears as a newbie I am leaning towards Schneider Bulk or Maverick/Melton flatbed! I appreciate China Town, Ethos, Blind Dog, and Seals for Christ threads and enjoy reading them all. What to do? Appreciate all/any advice and input from any drivers/trainers. Thanks and have a Happy New Year from a future wanna-be!

You wont work as hard on tanks....no tarping or strapping....flat is more versatile and there are more opportunities as a newb. Tanks are hard to learn on, especially if you pull a single bore....can be really dangerous.

Flatbedding involves strapping and tarping. The tarps are heavy. I didn't make it on with System because I couldn't safely lift the weight they wanted me to lift and hold. I can work out and try again, though. My uncle flatbeds and runs heavy/specialized. It can be rewarding. He's a happy guy, but you need to be physically strong enough to do it.

Tanker is trickier to drive. Even baffled tanks will slosh. I have scared myself a few times misjudging curves. You have to be really good with trailer awareness when backing or pulling through a rack. If it's HazMat, you could be in a lot of trouble if you have a spill.

Thanks for your response Flatbedder73, appreciate it, in your opinion, if I may, would you go with TMC,Melton, or Maverick. I read good things about all three; I live about half way between Columbus and Cincinnati!

Frac sand in Pennsylvania, Ohio, and West Virginia. Dry Bulk. Make approx $6000 in one week.

I've heard really good things about Maverick. Are you within Keim TS territory?

There is also Schneider, who runs bulk and Prime who runs flatbed. Those might be good potential backup choices.

I'm with Melton and I'm really liking it here. The people here are great from drivers to the office. Everyone willing to help if you need it.

Maverick I have heard a lot of good about. The main reason I didn't go there was I don't like auto trans.

TMC I have heard is like boot camp. Hear the pay is good and they offer home weekly.

Honestly all of your choices are good ones and you just have to look through the details of what fits YOU the best. What's good for me may not be for you and vice versa.

ive never done tanker but I do flatbed and I like it, I manly do dry wall and lumber, the reason I like flatbed is the physical part of it, just really really sucks in the winter, at least here in co. from what I have herd, tanker is good to know how to drive. I got into flat because I want to get into specialized hauling and I thinks that flat the best way to start, just depends on what you want to do in your career. best of luck to ya and keep us posted on what you get into, be safe and have fun in what ever you get into.

I would pick Boyd Bros :). Oh wait I'm kinda partial since my bf drives for them lol. They have a terminal in Cinncinati that would be your home terminal if you went with them.
