I need to know if I can legally hook my rachet binders directly to my j-hooks to secure a load. I know it is done but I've heard its a $500 fine if DOT sees it. I can't find anything in the regs that states you can't do it. Does anyone know if it is legal or not? Thanks in advance.

What brand of trailer and do your J hooks say anything on them? Only asking because I bought a couple extra J hooks for my Mac and they have several different versions. The ones I bought say "flat hook only" where others have a triangle cut hole for a chain. I would think this is the only way they could get you. I have never heard of anyone getting wrote up for this and I see most guys doing it. I can't because all the J hooks I have are too thick for the chain hook with the exception of the ones that say "flat hook only".

I heard this also, but it mainly pertained to Reitnour J-hooks. I've got one laying around that had gotten ripped, if I can find it I will take a pic of it.

Ratchet binders yes. Snap binders no. Snap binders cannot attach directly to the attachment point on a trailer.

um.......what makes the difference what type of binder it is? And do you have any link to where the regs say this?haulhand Thanks this.

I have to correct this.... First off it was a company policy I had heard not some regulation.

Thanks guys for the responses. My company runs Macs and Reitnouer trailers. I have 3 types of j-hooks with me, the Macs and Reitnouers with an oblong circle in the middle and the Reitnouers with the triangle in the middle. The latter style seem to be the older design and are chewed up a little. I only use these when I have no other options.
I'll check to see if anything is stamped on any of them other than WLL 6600.
