ok, to start off it's a 2001 fld120 car carrier with a c15 in it, it runs great and everything works well, has about 800k, now here is my nightmare, since i got the truck about 10 months ago it's been having a steering issue such that the truck does not come to center, meaning when driving down the road you move the wheel left or right, it does not spring back to center and feels stiff, i have replaced EVERYTHING in the front end, box, pins, all ball joint and u joints, pump, filter, bearing, tires, aligned it 4 times and absolutely no improvementwhat did i miss ? the truck does this at any speed trailer or no trailer, loaded, unload, i have checked everything up and down
help pls!!!! i don't know what to do, i don't want to loose my business.
fld120 steering problem ! pls someone help me !

SHC Thanks this. -
i replaced the u joint at the box, i had the shaft off completely with steering wheel moving around easy, they u joint inside feel free as well

Have you tried jacking both steering tires off the ground to see if it still does it?
To me it sounds like something is binding up? -
yes i have, but that will not show you much since there's no load on the tires. yes it really feels like binding but everything has been replaced and checked out at multiple shops so idk
i haven't replaced the bushings shackles, bad spring maybe?
-
Have you checked the front spring hanger and leaf spring bushings at the front and back of the leaf spring?Have you checked the rear suspension out? Check rear axles for alighnment, bad bushiings in the tourqe arms.does it have the airliner suspension? Last place I had worked had a few of them on dumps they rode ok but the air leafs would never stay in place if I remember right we ended up welding some blocks to keep them centered it has been 7 or 8 years so don't hold me to it.also just because the steering box was replaced dosent mean its good I had a problem a while back truck was all over the road put a reman box from rush pb was even worse tried adjusting the box and couldent get the play out of it swapped another reman box and haswnt been back.

yes it a airliner, i haven't checked the spring bushing or hangers, the rear hasn't been touched but has been aligned on all 3 axles, the strange thing is then you're stopped you have some returnabilty but thats from the tires, but as soon as you begin to roll it just stiff and stuck, hmmm springs ? at 5mph the rear wouldn't affect much i guess

That does help. Did the truck have the king pins replaced before you got it? It could have a burr on one and could cause this also.SHC Thanks this.
-
Another question... on a car hauler do they have the cab lowered closer to the frame than normal? What do the cab mounts look like? If they are worn out it could cause it by binding up the steering shaft.

I would drop the tierod from both steering arms, also remove draglink, lift frontend, rotate each tire by hand through full steering movement checking for tight king pins. If no problem found, I would go to the steering gear. The gear has a built in tight spot at center steer. If it is adjusted too tight it will bind before it hits the center of the high point of the gear.
Les2 Thanks this.
