Did you try the filters in the stock OEM filter box with the plumbing they have under the hood?
Maybe that is why you never seen a difference?
My highway dyno lets me tell a difference.
Fleet air filters...anyone use them?

strange when EVERY STUDY done show that the less restriction in the intake and exhaust increases hp and mpg, headers give more hp than stock exhaust manifolds, straight thru mufflers give more hp than stock, true dual exhaust give more hp than single exhaust, nascar uses restrictor plates (in the intake) to slow cars down... k & m makes filters that have less restriction for a reason... more hp and better fuel milage. a company that makes millions a year has done their research.
Joetro and Sumothertrucker Thank this. -
Just because a truck has straight through exhaust doesn't mean it has zero back pressure. Every bend in the exhaust pipe creates backpressure. One 90* bend in the pipe is the equivalent of the engine having to push the exhaust through 15 feet of straight pipe. I have personally never seen one of my diesels not benefit in better economy from removing stock mufflers and running straights or high flow mufflers.

Flood you do know that Nascar only uses restrictor plates in Two tracks.
This is just a sales pitch for a product. Period, If it is so great they will give a guarantee for downstream damage and have proven dyno results. To simulate a truck driving you just need a fan, it is not rocket science.
If they do not have these things or if it is made by Speedway Corporation RUN away!
When I re-powered trucks and figured the exhaust restriction we always used 20 ft for every 90 but it is different for the shot tangent to the long radius elbow. Stem-co use to have a real good book on exhaust restriction.Stuskw and rollin coal Thank this. -
but why not prove it or dosprove it yourself with your dyno all you need to do is hook up a flow meter to the fuel lines (pick up and return) to see just how much FUEL a truck uses at 60mph for 15 min then change just the filter to a freeflow filter (k & m or fleet) and do the test again, with a GOOD set of meter's you should be able to know within 1/4 oz how much fuel was used, then you can post that YOU have proven they didn't get better mpg
doesn't sound to hard and you SHOULD have everything to do it in your shopColumbiaBoB, Stuskw and Joetro Thank this. -
If you get the Fleet Air Filter, make sure you clean it about every 4 months per their instructions that is if you are regular OTR operation. Clean it more often if you are in dusty conditions. Don't go by filter gauge. I went 6 months before cleaning mine that is too long and it was restricted with dirt it filtered.
I know PP exhaust manifolds for my CAT are special cast ones and I did see PDI's exhaust manifold at MATS this year that was only a stock OEM that were just ported and polished that wasn't even close to PP one. I am glad I went with PP with mine.
With a Volvo motor, you are limited on the aftermarket stuff. -

I thought about taking out the fog lights and plumbing air in from there, but down real low would be alot dirtier air not far from surface of road. I was going to replace the fog lights with a dual row LED light bar that the off road racers use: http://www.rigidindustries.com/product-p/eseries30.htm . Real Bright to see the deer and would mount up flat between the fog light openings in front of truck on center of air dam.
Check out this youtube video with the difference in lighting: [ame]http://youtu.be/-jyereRdZso[/ame] -

There are often reasons that are not apparent.
Where improvements can be made is where the OEM's have made their decisions for commercial or regulatory reasons.
Pulling air from the sides of the hood could have reasons like guiding the high pressure against the windscreen past the sides rather then over the cab in to the trailer.
Guiding road spray away from the windscreen.
I'm not saying this is the case but there are sometimes reasons beyond the obvious.
