I have been given the oppratunity to work for a Manufacturing company that has their own fleet of tractors. Here is my question, would there be much difference between a dedicated transport company or a manufacturing company that run its own freight? If interested the company is Howard Industries.

:smt117I would rather work for the manufacturing company, hauling their own product. They will understand any problems you have easier. You will deal with same people every day, and they usually pay a little better.

I too would rather work for a manufacturing company vs. a common carrier. Of course it would depend on pay, benefits, work environment and so forth. You will have more of a chance being a name than just a number.

"up here" in the north east, we too had and i say HAD companies that had thier own fleets.....after some serious counting of numbers by the "bean counters" many of those companies fired off the drivers and sold the trucks to driver leasing companies...now sometimes the drivers get re-hired by the leasing company, but to cut expenses the leasing company will refuse to re-hire ALL the drivers, then at a much LATER time put ads in the paper, and hire drivers at LOWER wages and LESSER benefits.....also there is absolutely NO guarantee that the re-hired drivers will be making the same wages, UNLESS the place is union, and the deal made was to keep the drivers at union wages....but here again, as a "lease driver" one would be working for the lease company, NOT the manufacturer any more.....got a problem with the manufacturer management...??? go see your NEW boss at the leasing company
it is not all peaches and cream when a manufacturing company has its own fleet. sooner or later, budget costs and cuts, profits, salary raises for the CEO's and other "really important" big shots are MORE a concern than the trucking division will ever be......then too, the insurance, benefits, wages, trucks, fuel, repairs etc,etc for having a private fleet, again cut into the profits and bonuses the "big shots" earn, just for sitting on their collective arses.......when it comes to losing money or making money the trucking division gets cut with out any concern for the employee's....God only knows the places up here that HAD their own fleets.....
you would be very lucky if you get into such a place, but then to, as a newbie, your chances may be "slim to none".....
