I always have the permit dept add extra weight, length, width, height that’s why the higher weight than what I scaled for. Permit dept does a ton of permits and always push me to do the permit before pu. 99% of time it works out. Only do this for not complicated loads…RGN seems to be more complicated than flatbed.

Even with the flip neck you have a short neck. It will take close to a 132” swing to get 20 on that steer with that WB. I have a 120” swing and 15’ between axles 1 and 2. I can only get 19 on the steer and 20 on the pusher with the neck all the way up. I’m guessing you have 86” without the flip and 98” with it. You will be toting a lot of dead weight by trying to run a 20k steer. A 16 would be perfect, but a 14 would work and they both are a lot lighter.

Ok. I will consider this. What about getting a different neck down the road?

Roll in there with more than 46 on a set of drives and see if they don’t weigh axles.

Cheaper to get a different trailer. That trailer isn’t built to accept a longer neck. A longer neck puts more stress on the front of the deck. So you would have to substantially beef up the trailer as well as get a longer neck. It can be done but it’s not cost effective

Ok. I won’t be getting another trailer. I’m stuck with this trailer for the next 4 years and don’t want to micky mouse it.
Will I need a double frame truck if I get only a 14k steer axle truck?

I don’t think you need a double frame. Especially if you keep a shorter wheel base. You are not really “heavy”. Personally I prefer a big single frame.

I am going to say a few things and then go away.

you don’t know what you don’t know at this point. In addition, you are not listening when experienced folks are trying to guide you I learning.

you need to stop and learn the basics. How and why does weight end up on axles. Based on load position, trailer length, axle spacing, axle group spacing and a number of other factors.

this should be done before you buy equipment- because equipment is expensive and difficult to change. You agreed to buy a trailer you know absolutely nothing about. You don’t really know how it works or why. You don’t know how to estimate axle weights and what to do to change them. Yoo don’t know enough to say whether the flip neck helps you a lot hurts you. You don’t know what is common in Setting up a trailer and what you can expect in the way of help with doing so. You couldn’t explain to a customer the process for flipping an axle or flipping a neck. I could go on but I suspect you are not inclined to learn the answers, instead chasing the “big” money.

an experienced HH guy would likely not have chosen a mechanical stretch trailer and been able to articulate why.

you need to find a mentor and ask questions and learn before you get I. Real trouble and piss away a ton of money in the-mean time.

unfortunately, there is a ton of math that goes into doing this particular job …

You don’t have the trailer to really gross more than 132. Which is 12/60/60. I would focus on getting a truck that will maximize that weight class.
