How much different is it floating gears in a big truck from floating gears on something like my old 6 speed f350? I understand clutching is different and synchronized vs non-synchronized manuals, but what about floating?

It is the exact same! Its all timing of aligning the gears so that they slip into place together. If you can float in your f350 you will be able to float in a big truck. May even be easier for you. Now in a big truck though you are going to need to downshift a little more. As long as you have been doing that too you will be fine. (down shifting requires revving up the rpm's to match your speed)

Personally I don't get why nobody's ever made HD synchro rings yet.

Heck, several times I floated my motorbike transmission. I had done that purely by accident.
