When Andrew hit in 92 I took 3 loads of water, canned food, baby food, diapers, tampons( wifes idea very high demand item!!!) etc to the hardest hit areas on the south side of Miami, Homestead and Perrine. My wife and I paid for 2 out of my pocket and my dad financed the third. We gave away EVERYTHING!
I don't understand people who see a disaster as a money making opportunity. If you live in the area and get a boost in your regular business ok, if you run to the area to make $ shame on you. -
It's simple supply and demand ... The customer doesn't HAVE to pay a ridiculous rate.... find someone to find it for what they're willing to pay...
After a disaster there are tons of loads going in and I would imagine zero going out. So it drives the rates up. Free market at work.. -

Wait, you donated 3 trailers worth of stuff? What was it worth, $100k? You must be the richest trucker out thereLepton1 Thanks this.

Not always. I watched a yankee with a 40' trailer slap full of generators in Miami while I was stuck in traffic. He was pulled up on the side of US1 selling his $500-600 generators for $2500 ea. There was a large crowd fighting over them until 2 guys beat the crap out of him threw all his money into the crowed, tossed him from the trailer and start pushing the now free generators out of the trailer. Hundreds watched, even some National Guard nearby. It was beautiful!!
A fair price!!!! Anything more and you are a predator!G13Tomcat Thanks this. -
2 trailers, my dad paid for the third about $65,000+/- I was a stock broker back then, I sold some collectable guns to finance the 2nd. I was with Dean Witter. And my wife had $.
I am poor ( lower middle) today. Maybe that's why. Actually I was U5ed (fired) with cause for going into a treatment center for cocaine and vodka We lived a very extravagant life. Great vacations. Great meals. Great memories. Bad planning. Thought it would go on forever.
I tell the truth, whether it makes me look good or bad
I paid for it, hired the driver and truck and threw it all out the back door. Great memory!
