First let me say this forum is one heck of an awesome resource. I've been searching and learning as much as I can, but I'm not gonna lie this industry has a huge learning curve. And I like that. But I know when to ask for help.

Here's the thing, I'm green and thinking about a career in the industry. I'm in a position to get my CDL. Live in Tampa, FL. Looking at going tanker/ hazmat endorsement. But open to freight too.

I have a family, and I'm willing to do OTR for at least a year for the experience, but ultimately would love to run local home daily or even weekly.

What's the situation here in Florida? Could use some advice. Best way to get my tanker experience? Is it worth it? Recommended companies?

There is also flatbed. Plant City is not far from you off 4, flatbed gypsum. You can probably get into Uranium Ore further south in that state with a end dump. It may not be Uranium, but it is a nuclear material.

The best thing for Florida is Miami. Cruise ships. Reefers of Provisions food supplies on the dock from all over the USA.

For me Florida = either Oranges in season to the north east (Ugh... tropicana train comes to mind, that one goes to Jersey in 15 hours. Hottest train on the entire east coast if not the nation.) Or chain and cable west to Texas and pipe back east to Jaxville.

And the girls... Ocala comes to mind.. whoo. But that's a different topic.

Tankers is the way to go. CTL Transportation, headquartered in Auburndale, hires new cdl school graduates and their tanker school is in Tampa. Graduate from a cdl school then attend tanker school right there in Tampa. Contact CTL and ask which school they recommend near you; there's probably 3 or 4 in your area they hire from.
CTL has local work, but I recommend doing some OTR at first to get the hang of tanker work. They run lots of Texas out of there.
Here's a picture of one of their trucks:

Here's a good benefit also: "Tuition reimbursement up to $6,000 paid within 25 months."
CTL Transportation will reimburse your cdl school tuition up to $6,000.00

Tanker companies will have you do a heart rate test. They want to make sure you can climb on top of the tank without becoming dizzy and possibly injuring yourself. Start exercising using the stair step method now to prepare for the heart rate test. You must pass this test!

Eventually you could haul fuel out of Port Tampa. Most require at least two years exp. Home daily/nightly, usually 12 hour shifts, decent money and easy work.

Good Luck to you and I must say; you have the right mindset to make this a successful career.. Most don’t realize that a year of paying dues to get some experience under their belt is the way to go. That will open so many doors to you for a long future as a driver; and possibly a long career somewhere with a good local job! Good Luck!

They changed their hiring requirements; two yrs. experience required. Seems a good outfit otherwise, based in Tampa.

Thank you to everyone who replied. I really appreciate it. I had no idea at first how varied this industry is from company to company and region to region. I guess that's expected.

Big thanks to @Chinatown seen your posts all over this forum. Reminded me that I've seen CTL all over Florida for years. Definitely gonna check em out.

I have another question, I've read about companies going back 3-5 years on MVR. Last year I was hit by a kid who ran a red light. She was cited at fault. Other than that my record is spotless. Will this impact my chances getting hired? I'm about to pay the DMV for my MVR just to check if it's even on it. My gut tells me it is. But Florida is weird sometimes with this being a no fault state. I currently work at a non cdl position and they ran a check on my MVR, and it came back clean. But I have no idea if they're more forgiving than CDL companies. Thanks again.
