Just finished an in chassis on my 3406e CAT. Looking for a Vibratech Damper, or one that's just as good. I've found fluid dampers from PDI and Pittsburgh power, but neither lists the manufacturer of their part. Does anyone know if either of these is actually a repackaged Vibratech, or know anything about their quality? Or maybe know who lists the actual vibratech piece?

If the dampener is not bent and if you take it off and bounce it on the tire and it does not rattle it is still good. Cummins is the only one that when doing a full warrentable overhaul supplied a dampener. The dampener is not of any use if the RPMs are below 1800 on most engines, that includes Cat if the dampener, with the rubber separator fell off, that was what we told the driver, keep your RPM below 1800 and you will be OK.

I was told that the 1LW 3406e CATs were prone to crank failure, and that it was due to the fluid damper losing viscosity, and therefore no longer doing it's job. My motor is a 1LW.

I purchased one from PP last year for my Detroit, and it was a Vibratech.

You are correct, I was rold the same thing from Bruce at PP.

I called Vibratech to order a balancer for my CAT, they said just call PP. I had it in a few days.

And when the crank breaks, you'll be lucky to not destroy the block too.

Has anyone kept their factory damper and just added the balancing ring.

My research shows that they do two different jobs. Balancer seems to do a great job smoothing out vibration, therefore reducing wear, breakage, etc. but the dampers job is to counteract torque flex / shear factor. I don't think I'd trust the addition of a balancer to pick up the slack of a damper that may be on it's way out.
