My company fuels exclusively at Flying J. This morning, while fueling up in McCalla, AL (south Birmingham), I noticed they had closed the restaurant—good riddance, I say—who wants an $8.00 cheeseburger that tastes like crap?

I buy fuel at the hook and I shower at the hook—that's it! Everything in their store is either overpriced or just plain nasty.

If I were the king of Flying J, here's what I'd do:

    1. STOP the price gouging in the store. Flying J should be a large enough entity to purchase items in bulk without having to resort to selling a pint of milk for $2.00.

    2. Get rid of the Country Market and bring in the Huddle House. Truck drivers want good and greasy food with lots of flavor and they want it cheap. Everything should be cooked on a grill with plenty of butter, grease and salt.

    3. Everyone knows truck drivers like electronic gizmos and doodads. The little glass display case with 2 CB's and a handful of GPS units just ain't gonna cut it. Iowa 80 anyone?

    4. Lose the pathetic game room with its five games. Rent the space to a CB shop.

    5. Expand the food items in the store and lose the tourist crap. Take the whole Mrs. Freshley's gum-cake display and chuck it right the hell out into the parking lot—bring in Hostess. Ditto with the Bon Appetit.

    6. Install freezers that actually work so that maybe a driver could buy an ice cream that wasn't melted. Stock plenty of frozen dinners at a good price and a bank of microwaves to heat 'em up... and make 'em Stouffer's or Marie Callender's—none of that Banquet crap!

I could go on and on... but then I'd have to charge a consulting fee.:biggrin_25525:

    Brickman Thanks this.

Did you fall in one of their massive potholes they seem to be so proud of?

I have been to Huddle House and to Waffle House and like them BUT they don't offer much, if any vegetables and salads. Country Market Restuarants of Flying J does offer that.

So, I am NOT looking forward to the fact that all Flying J's may close ALL Country Market Restuarants.

Maybe you are going for the 340lb trucker look who dies in his sleep when he stops breathing/has a heart attack and gets to be the truck stop spectacle when the police arrive and the corner has to find out how the hell to get the giant man out of the truck, but uh, no thanks.

If I owned a truck stop I'd not even HAVE gasoline/car sections. It just breeds issues. Instead I'd have grills outside, and a grocery store inside.
