That is a good one.
It's really been my experience that it's all location. The quality of the J food is a direct reflection of the people running it. It's all the same ingredients and food being shipped in, but if there is no care taken in preparing it can be really terrible. Anyone who has worked in a kitchen knows you have to really stay on top of inventory to make sure stuff is fresh and, heaven forbid, not beyond the expiration dates. I once had one of those pasta dishes and the sauce was just horrid. It tasted like foul milk. And that was in SLC, the very home of J where you'd expect everything to be in order. But I was in Montana at a J there last week and had an awesome breakfast, like none other I'd had in a long time. Location, location, location.
Flying J Restaurants will no longer be open 24 hours.

Yesterday evening (May 17, 2009) I was at the Flying J, Exit 323, I 81 in Clear Brook, Virginia (just north of Winchester). There was a big sign on the Country Market Restuarant that that said CLOSED from 12 Midnight to 5 am. However, you can still get some types of food and drink at the C-Store.
I asked when will that be implemented? Next week.
When did you used to close? 1 am. How long has that been going on? Since March 2008.
I looked around for the two hours I was there and I did not see any more than let's say fifteen people in that time span. It does not seem that the Flying J is conducting enough business even on a Sunday evening let alone the wee hours of the morning. -
well..when their prices are 30-100% higher than anywhere else..you gota expect that blue collar people wont buy..its simple. I guess a walmart type person has to come in with alot of money..buy it all up and run it right.

It's probably a blessing that the one on I-71 north of Columbus Ohio is closed at night. I would imagine that's when they start getting the rubber eggs and the rest of the nasty things they have on the buffet ready. They used to have a decent buffet there and in the last few months it's been incredible just to look at, let alone eat it. YUCK.

I heard somewhere that a lot of things are precooked, then microwaved when you order them. Such as the hamburger steak. I've had one or two of these things, and I can believe it. It reminded me of school lunches, except way more expensive.

I don't eat at the Flying Hook anymore, except once in a while I'll order their pizza. I've had the luke warm mystery-meat soup at Lebec, Ca, and discovered a huge crushed spider on the underside of the lettuce in my hamburger, after i'd already bitten a couple of it's legs off, at the Caldwell, Idaho hook.
Their barffet is terrible. I couldn't leave the TS for about an hour after eating J's barffet for fear that my stomach would call "Blow all tanks!". Good thing I had a potty at the ready. :smt078 -
Flying J has terrible food. Never eaten at one yet that was worth a crap. I notice they are all closed at night now. All truck stop food is terrible for the most part with the exceptions being the few mom/pop TS that are left. I eat out of the truck 99% of the time anymore. When I don't it is usually cause i find a mom/pop TS or restaurant that has truck parking.

You know what's crazy, how many people i've seen complain about the price of food on here. What do you guys drive for 0.98/mile or what, can't even cover the gas or something? It's crazy and sad that you guys think it's to expensive to pay $25-35 for a meal and be full. Wow!!!! I bet most of ya drive a aerodynamic rig too huh, 7-8 mpg hauling a van loaded with tampons, oh my god!!!!
onelikeseabass Thanks this. -
Well, we ate at the same J, in Caldwell ID, just last week, and I could not fault their food. Probably the best meal all week, and better than more expensive options like IHOP.
Then again, I spend a lot of time in Europe, where the TS food is something else, thanks to the Eastern/former soviet influence! Pickled eggs, mushroom and dog liver anyone?! -
I ate at the J in Twin Falls, ID last night and the burger was really good. The bacon on it was cooked good and crispy. I used my frequent fueler coupons.
For those of you that hate Flying J food, I would say to try eating at the ones up here in the North West. From my experience, it's completely different. And the food comes out fairly quickly also. I've given up on J restaurants in the south and central states for the most part. Not only is the food not as fresh, or cooked as well. It seems to take forever also.
