I would like to see a breakdown of their statistics. I would imagine that the majority of the accidents were from people texting as opposed to just talking. While talking on the phone is distracting, it fails to compare with having to constantly look at your phone, and try to type. Hands free is far, far safer for talking, not sure why they would want to outlaw that. There is no excuse to ever text and drive. I just wish everyone everyone felt the same way. And yes, I am guilty of having done it mystelf. I'm not holier than thou. Everyday I work to not use my phone while driving. It is easy to do. Nothing is that important to die for, but more important, to inadvertantly kill someone else for.

It's not so much the talking as it is the button pushing. You do that whether texting or calling someone. Voicemail, press this, press that. It's not like flipping a switch on the dash you can do in the dark because you know where it is.

I'm trying be honest from what I see on the road. We all love the phone and of course we are going to make a fight to keep it. Dialing a phone number alone causes erratic lane control. The first step of recovery is admitting you have a problem. :biggrin_2559:

Everytime we hear of a rearend accident on this forum, the first thing everyone says, "He must of been on the cellphone".

The point is....LaHood is hellbent in removing all personal electronic devices out of the cab......
This is an agenda folks...Much like the agendas to ablate both our 1st and 2nd Amendment rights....

You're absolutely right. No argument there. But I believe before it's over with 4 wheelers won't be using cellphones either while driving. There are too many deaths. Just like when they made seatbelts mandatory.

Perhaps to solve the problem....When taking a skills test for your CDL....You should prove you can maneuver safely while driving in traffic; blindside back and;Alley dock while on the phone......
If you can do all that....LaHood should just pizz off!!!!!

Rand McNally better get their lobbyists hustling, next thing will be outlawing maps and atlases. We sure as heck don't want any truckdrivers looking at them!

But it's OK to have those vanity mirrors on the sunvisors of cars for applying makeup and shaving as you commute to work.

Fine ban them, but it needs to be for everyone, not just big trucks.

What's the point of having a "transportation secretary" again? Oh, right. Just another figurehead that feels the need to make up extra rules while in office.

Interesting twist here in WI, that doesn't have much to do with this . . . but it's food for thought . . . our incoming Governor is planning on making it so that departments like the DNR, etc (don't remember the other ones mentioned as examples, too early) cannot make regulations and rules without them going through the state Congress.
