The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration on Thursday, May 5, issued its final rule amending the commercial driver's license knowledge and skills testing standards and establishing new minimum federal standards for states to issue a commercial learner's permit. FMCSA said the final rule will enhance safety by ensuring that only qualified drivers are allowed to operate CMVs.
"These new requirements we are announcing today will help ensure that carriers and drivers are in full compliance with federal safety regulations," U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said at a press conference while standing beside motorcoach buses parked at Nationals Park in Washington, D.C., to highlight how the rule also will improve passenger bus safety... the states i deal with regarding new people are so archaic..each state sets its own rules, and like clockwork, the states, even worse, the actual people testing the students, change the rules seemingly for each person being tested... we never know from day to day if students will be given the tests fairly or hap-hazardly due to the DMV people being in a good mood or a bad mood....
can a mod/admin "dock this thread"..??? -
That manual transmission restriction, looks like that takes effect in 3 years.
Wish it took effect sooner.Rollover the Original Thanks this. -
July 9th 2011.....then by 2014 all states must be in compliance....
i'll be a betting guy and say many states will jump on quick for the revenue it will generate. -
I wish they had done this before I attended CDL 'school.' Not having more than 5 hours of training on a manual truck doesn't cut it.

I learned on a stick and drove a stick for years. Now I got an auto. Every once in a while I'll jump in a friends truck and shift just to keep my skills up. That hole directive in my opinion is a good thing and I welcome it!

GA already has the restriction, well according to the CDL manual they do. Haven't seen one though.Rerun8963 Thanks this. -
