My new jeep has fog lights, and I'm not sure what the etiquette (or law???) is for using them. I'd appreciate sharing your thoughts.

Should fog lights be turned off for oncoming traffic? I don't recall ever being blinded by oncoming fog lights, and it seems like they are aimed very low. But I'd like to be sure that I'm not blinding anyone.

We get a lot of patchy morning fog around here, and the fog light helps a lot during low visibility. Is it worth it to keep flipping the fog lights on and off between patches of fog?

    Thanks! :biggrin_255:

There are no laws restricting fog lights. It's 50/50 with truck drivers. Some will use them all the time, while others show respect to each other by not using them when unnecessary. They point low, but to a trucker with tired eyes, any bright lights hurt.
There's even a thread in here debating about them if you want to type "fog lights" in the search feature.

Use them in fog, rain and snow. Even use them on secondary roads if you like. But there are many truckers that would appreciate if you didn't use them on the interstate on clear nights. Enjoy the new Jeep! :)

If they're actual fog lights and not the kind that dodge likes to put on their pick em up trucks they should be fine. Real fog lights don't bother me, poorly adjusted ones do though. Don't worry about it though if your lights bother me I have some nice driving lights too and I'll let you know lol.

don't have them turned on up here in some of the New England states....you''ll get a ticket.!!! there had better be fog when you got them on.....(up here).....you should check your local state laws.

I have to shield my eyes at night from oncoming fog lights or auxiliary lights . They really bother me and I don't think it's considerate to have them on under normal conditions. I rarely use mine if at all. Especially on a two lane road at night .... you're taking a huge risk if the opposing vehicle is blinded !!

I ran mine on the JK whenever the headlights were on...mine were adjusted to light up the area just in front of the Jeep where my headlights didn't really cover, very handy offroad at night...Also had PIAA 540's on the windshield to light up the area just beyond where the headlights would reach, very handy on the back roads here....Never used the PIAA's when there was on coming traffic they were crazy bright..

Fog lights on the chevy pickups are bad.

But then again, so are the regular lights on the vehicles where they are running HD and blinding the oncoming traffic.

We should clear the air on what exactly a "fog" light is. Amber lights are fog lights, clear lights are driving lights.

not all fog lights are amber. the amber vs clear on which works better is a debate that has been going for years
