A lot of those multi stop local gigs really test your driving skills! Most places you deliver aren't necessarily big truck friendly. Not only dealing with small tight places but you have to navigate through cars and everyday customers coming and going too. Nobody to unload you either, all manual labor!

I can't really call it food service.
I shuttle burgers from the maker to the distributor. 50 miles one way, all drop and hook.
So far the only bad thing, if you are last to the distributor you must stay to pull all our empty trailers from the docks.

I work for a smaller wholesaler and can tell you the work has it's good and bad points. The upside is money is good and I'm home by dinner every night. The downside is it's tough work, You have to touch every single box on the truck and deal with trying to fit your truck into tiny parking lots or else hump from across the street at times.. All in all I like the job though. I don't mind a little hard work, Keeps me in shape

My first driving job was for a local food service gig. It is really hard work and is more manual labor then driving in my opinion. Can be dangerous and in my case it was. Was delivering in seattle in the wee hours of the morning and had a hand truck full of boxes of tomatoes got down the ramp slipped cause it was wet and ended up rolling my ankle breaking 3 bones in the process. (that was a year ago this march and i'm still not back to work btw)
I didnt mind the work and like previously stated your always tired and you have long early hours sometimes. -
Job isn't for everyone. Its a physical Job but not bad like people think. Most of the time your pulling a daycab and 36 fter, you can get into places you wouldn't think you could. If you don't train yourself for the work you will be always tired. I still hit the gym to strengthen my body for the job maybe that's why I'm not tired all the time. The pay is great and I enjoy only workin 4 days home almost everynight. My company had me just pulling trailers this week all driving and I actually rather unload than just drive. Driving was very boring compared to what I'm used to now. I was at one point a person who would say I would never touch freight f that! It's a job not for everyone but give it a try and you might like it or not.

I agree with you Radman. I enjoyed it cause it kept me active but do to my unfortunate accident i cant go back to that type of physical work.

I delivered a load of canned tomato products to a food service outfit this morning. I asked one of their delivery drivers how many stops he had on today..."only 28 today...yesterday was 40!"..... and he's back in the yard by 5PM.
Busy guy... -
Yea the stops add up....I was only driving a straight box truck but i had almost 30 stops one time....Subway was a big customer for where i worked so that was 80% of my cargo and when they would have their subway specials you knew you were gonna have a lot of product on board lol

I'm a city P&D guy right now, but food service is tempting to me. I like being BUSY all day and the money they make is better than what I'm pulling in. I just get bored pulling up to a door and having someone load me up for a half hour. Plus I only get 40 hours. The only part scaring me off from switching is the early and I mean EARLY schedule sysco runs. Leave at 2am?? C'mon, I have kids. It's not going to work right now. Would any of you switch from LTL to food service or is this just crazy talk?

andy....you might wanna weigh the options a little. with the hours of food service you will be tired when you get up and when you get off work and being that you have kids you will be to tired to wanna do anything until the weekend comes around even then you will wanna catch up on sleep but it's up to you.
andy Thanks this.
