Not all routes leave at 2am. I don't work for Sysco but I leave anywhere from 230am-530am depending on what day it is. Start time depends on the route. I chose a few routes with early start times because they go into the city. I know Sysco drivers that don't leave till 6am. All depends on what routes you get.

I cant actually speak on behalf of food service drivers, my experience was being the one that accepted the deliveries coming in (kitchen slave). Maneuvering the truck was one problem alot of the drivers had at my restaurant, we had a loading dock but you would have to squeeze through 2 pillars that i had trouble gettin a prius through just to get to it. So most wouldn't even try, tho i have seen some do it. Our 2 main deliveries were from US Foods and Sysco. Our stop was usually 1 of the first 5 stops for the drivers at US, so they were very energetic and had everything were it needed to be, most the time b4 I even knew they were there. For Sysco we were the last stop, and you could tell the drivers were worn out when they got there. The usual driver for our route told me that that route was 60 stops. I used to meet the drivers at the ramp with my own hand truck and help them out. What would normally take 45 mins to do by themselves was reduce to around 15 mins, that was checking everything off and them driving away. My ahole boss wanted all the drivers to stock everything on their own, tho I would just send them on their way (no need to make them late for the next drop, when I could just stock everything), Dealing with the customers, I would say is the worst part depending on where your at. No not all are gonna treat you bad, but most in this area (Orlando, FL) think your here to serve their every need. I worked at 3 diff restaurants and only 1 of the 6 managers I had treated the drivers like they were ppl. The places I worked were upscale formal dining restaurants where everybody thinks they're better than you, so I can't talk on behalf of individual mom and pop places or fast food joints.
All in all, I wouldn't mind doing the job. As this is just my experience on the other end of the deliveries and don't think its like this everywhere.

The food service business is a very grueling & physically demanding job. It will definitely keep those extra lbs off!

The unloading part isn't hard to me. I couldn't stand the start times. Too freaking early! Getting up at 2-3am was a pain. 6am start time feels like I'm sleeping In everyday.

yea that is crazy talk. I enjoy LTL, I dont know what company you work for but we are required to touch freight if he have too. Although the food industry is probly the best to get into since there will always be a need for food

apksumorider I worked in a restaurant as well. Although its in a high class town, it was all pub food etc. My boss would have two guys go outside the second the truck comes in and help with it. All the driver would do is grab off truck and maybe bring it to door. Other than that the two guys would take and stock everything themselves. But I know what you mean,, in Greenwich, CT the customers all think the driver is there to bring it in, put it away, set it up etc... I dont like when I have to go to greenwich

Well, I was a route salesman (breadman) for 15 years & I would run into those guys every so often & holy crap, those guys work their butts off. Boy would they get pissed when they had to shovel snow or move a mountain of trash that was piled up right inside the door. Wait, that crap pisssed me off too. Some of those fast food places were awful. BKs were the worst. Anyway, I felt sorry for them til I heard how much they made.

do the other fast food places not have store employees help with the unloading and moving of items into the stores?

when I worked at Chick Fil A two of us would go out, the driver would basically unload by moving the stuff to the side or rear doors of the trailer where we'd pull it off and haul it inside the store or to the storage shed for the cups and stuff.
i will say though, the day it POURED for hours and hours sucked to unload and do put away. I was soaked completely through and that was using a cut up trash bag for a poncho.

When I worked for a Wendy's supplier, it was myself and my co-driver that did it all. No employees helped. Granted, most of our deliveries were down in the middle of the night.

I work for a company called North Park Transportation. We're based out of Denver though I live in Billings. I ended up getting a liftgate run and a raise sooo... I'm good for now. But yeah, I always keep Sysco in the back of my mind as a back up plan. I know I could get on there no problem if things ever go south at my job. Plus, with my proximity to the oilfields, it's hard to get drivers for companies here. Sysco is hiring drivers at full scale here right now if that tells you anything about the "shortage"... at least around here.
