For an OTR driver is a 100 days on / 30 days off type schedule reasonable?

    Hello,
I am a forty seven year old American who lives mostly in Asia (Philippines and Thailand). I am interested in working as a OTR truck driver but would like to make frequent trips back to Asia for month long vacations. I plan on taking a good driver's training course and putting in the time, work and effort to be a well qualified new driver.

My ideal would be to work on a 100 days on / 30 days off or other similar type of schedule to allow for the long distance travel to Asia to enjoy some down time. Can someone advise if this type of schedule would generally be attractive or at least reasonable to a trucking company?

    Thanks in advance

Some of the larger carriers would. I just took six weeks off and returned as if I never left.

not likely for any company owned truck, but you might be able to justify it as an owner operator. But then to take an entire month off you would either need to haul very high revenue freight, which is not very likely for someone just starting out, or run longer than the 100 days you hope for.

Maybe one of the mega carriers would do this for you. They have thousands of trucks & a good turnover of drivers, so they wouldn't even miss you. I was in a similar situation as you, but my hangout is China. Didn't work for a mega carrier, big but not mega, so the best they could do for me was 6 weeks straight per year, then I could miss my flight and get another week or two. Well, time to go see mamasan & choose one of her employees for a little massagee!

What attracted you to China? I havebeen here in Asia full-time since 2005, most of the time in Thailand, for the girls and laid back lifestyle. I now have a regulargirlfriend in the Philippines and am enjoying the island life.

Thanks for the replies so far.

Every company I ever worked for if you take off more than week they are looking to come get the truck. I'm not saying it can't be done because anything is possible. Just don't expect the truck to be put on hold.
I worked for one company three times.

You would be able to just have to clean out your truck every time and be in a different truck every 130 days
