It will either be backing or bad directions.

    Yeah! What Runion said!

I would throw in things like managing your money or spending on the road. It can be terribly expensive to live on the road unless you shop away from the T/S's.

Another thing might be lerning to work the company paperwork in your favor. If you get paid for loading /unloading, tarping etc...the accessorial pays. You need to keep close eye on what you put on paper & what gets included in your paychecks.

I have to throw in resisting the temptation to be the "company hero" by letting them con you into doing something you know can bite you in the ### later. Once you show them you'll "take the chances" they won't hesitate to let you prove it as many times as you can before getting caught. Unfortunately, when you do get caught, they will disavow any knowledge of your actions & leave you hanging.

I've played the "hero" more times than I care to recall & I can't think of one time where the company reciprocated in a way that I needed them to. All they would do is give me more "mission impossibles" as a reward for all the other mission impossibles.

I did make a fair amount of money doing this but that was at a time when it was much easier to get away with. I wouldn't bother nowadays. There's just not enough in it for me to bother with those chances anymore. Too many people trying to make a living sueing truckdrivers & their company's & too many cops trying to hold everyone to the letter of the law.

Well pretty much everything you know in life will change. The driver was right about sleeping eating dispatchers and spending money. Also hopefully you don't mind staying away from home. Good Luck Man

It depends on what part of the industry you get into. I am in the LTL sector, and my biggest problems tend to consist of bad routers and incompetent dock workers always loading the truck in the wrong order.

Aside from everything else mentioned in the prior postings.

The biggest thing you will face.... Reality.

This is one career choice that will wake you up to the underbelly of the beast (America), and how it operates.

It will also be a mind altering experience, as you learn to cope with College Educated idiots.

:biggrin_25514:Example: Did you know, that a 600hp Cat engine, gets the same fuel economy pulling 80K lbs up a 10% grade, as it did on flat ground running empty? Or at least, that's what some guy with a college education told me...He works for CFI, and re-trains (shows video to) truckers who can't comply with fuel economy requirements.

I'm still waiting on this clown to prove it in the real world. I think he is using those fuel pills I've seen in another post ;)
