And not mentioned so far are the worst offenders. Diesel APU's most of which have no pollution-DPF filter or pollution requirements, still burn as dirty as prior (2008) larger diesels. And poorly maintained.
Carbon monoxide is not the issue, it is the rest of the chemicals that are spewing out. All of them mounted with a low exhaust, no stack, right under the cab. Just put Diesel APU in the search box above and see how many threads pop up complaining about them.
Bottom line is there are ideal ways to set up any of these situations to avoid conflicts.
Discharge any engine exhaust, Gas or Diesel APU, or large engine 4 feet or more above the head of humans in the immediate vicinity.
Easily half the trucks produced now have low mounted exhaust. Why? Is it healthier. No. Is it cheaper? Yes.

Best common sense solution is not to idle/use APUs when you don't have to. Why are so many idling when the temps are 40-70F?

I had the same #### in TN one day with some super trucker that had a big pete and one of those super long sleepers. It was a older worn down one and he had a generator built into the side of the truck under the sleeper. I parked next to him went in a ate, got shower. I came back to my truck and it was filled with fumes from that generator..
Had I gone to sleep next to him I might not have woken up... Had to move my truck it was so bad. I told the dude it was putting out a crazy amount of fumes and he just shrugged it off..Hulld Thanks this. -

This 2020 Freightliner I'm driving has a nice setup. 8 batteries from the factory. Then an electric a/c for sleeper. For the heater it's the diesel burning espar coolant heater. If the batteries get low the engine will start automatically to recharge them. Normally they just recharge during the day when driving. So you avoid all the bad exhaust from gas or diesel generators.

How is the electric a/c? How long does it last? Do you have additional domestic loads like a microwave, coffee maker, etc., as well? If so, how is the battery life?

It's good for sleeping during 10 hour breaks. The truck has extra insulation and the curtains for the sleeper are really thick. Almost like insulated curtains. So it only has to cool or heat the sleeper when parked. It seems to be run about 9-10 hours. When I first got the truck it had two bad batteries and was not working. They replace them and then the setup was going 6 hours before the engine would start to recharge. Now being spriing it seem to get going 10 hours. Don't have run the electric a/c or heater. Before it was 6 hours and I have the factory fridge and CPAP running little flat screen TV and pure sinwave inverter and microwave. If I turn on microwave I usually just start the engine. Because once the batteries get to 12.1v the computer will start engine and idle for 2 hours to recharge them. When the engine is running it will heat or cool the sleeper using regular truck a/c or heater. It switches system once the truck engine is going.
The electric a/c works good. I think the heater should be bigger. In extreme cold say 10F or colder it seem to struggle to keep even sleeper warm. I think because it's coolant heater it just to much to keep engine block and coolant hot. Normally it keep coolant at 150F. But in those really cold temp it dropping to 120F. One thing I don't like is Freightliner moved the vents for sleep heat and a/c to driver side. So in real cold temp it not blowing hot aire to passenger side of sleeper. The walls get really cold and your feet can get cold.
Then it has the Interior Comfort Mode. It supposed to heat and cool the front of cab(normal when sleeping it only cools or heat sleep) the problem is the temperature sensor is in the sleeper. So if your in driver seat. The front of cad can get cold or hot before it will start the engine. They set it up so the front dash fan will only come on when the engine is running. The electric a/c iniin sleeper is separate system from the truck regular a/c. To get any front a/c say during 34 reset it has to idle engine. That's the short coming of the system. It seems that you want to blame the guy who actually did this right from you exposure. Am I wrong?
If anything, where he mounted it was very well thought out because when most of us park, we are no where near the generator.,
By the way, piping the exhaust away from somewhere, more often than not it isn't effective, rv owners use a venturey type of an exhaust ....
