This is from "Fleet Owner" Newsletter, May 1, 2010, Throw Out The Book, just one section about the e-logs
Most of PeopleNet's customers are private fleets and most of them are already using electronic logs, Konezny says. He sees that as a big advantage when it comes to hours-of-service compliance now or under CSA 2010, primarily because electronic logs virtually eliminate the possibility of logbook inaccuracies or manipulation.
"When CSA 2010 takes effect, there will be a very dramatic reduction in potential hours-of-service-related penalties if you use electronic logs," he says.
There is also the part about lawyers and wrecks and the scrutiny of the logs when a wreck occurs, you know how truckers are always at fault for every wreck.
Also it appears there have been some kind of trucking hours since 1938 according to www.wikipedia.com, Hours of Service, 12 hrs driving, doing reports, loading, etc. with 3 hrs for meal breaks and rest = 15 total hrs, then 9 hrs sleep. the rules and hours may change, but they have always been there.
Paper can make it easier to run illegal, but to tell the truth if you have a stapled book it is still hard to not run legal unless you pull the staple like someone mentioned either on here or another post, and trying to run with 2 logs is just crazy I think.
I think that the electronic logs with companies who have liked to push and get you to run illegally in some cases because there was no recourse are now having their feet held to the flames more and making them make sure you stay legal. But I am sure for the moment there are still ways to terrorize drivers, what about roll over hours I wonder. -
We used to once upon a time:
use rotary phones for example. Look at where we're at now. The list goes on and on.
This is a natural progression toward accountability which has a direct reflection upon overall safety, not only toward trucking but as it relates to the motoring public that are also on the road with us at any given point.
Those E-logs make paper logs look like "cave-man" like tools... We have to always carry paper logs with us in case the E system goes down. It's only happened once and I can say this, going back to the silly paper log and drawing lines with a ruler and then looking at the map to get my exact closest town written down (keep in mind, this all takes time); it was annoying.
I prefer the E-log. Nothing to hide here; I like running legal. I've had DOT officers standing right on my running board pushing buttons on it too looking at my summary / available hrs etc. So, don't think that they don't know how to use it because they DO.
Don't worry, you can turn the brightness down if it bothers you to drive at night; you can turn the volume down when it warns you that you only have .25 hrs left of drive time (that's 15 minutes so I certianly hope you have a truck stop with a reserved spot saved for all the guys that plan to run their 10.75 hr shift out regulary).
Got nothing to hide right? E-logs are the new way and they will probably be replaced with something even better here sooner than not.
I like them, seen both sides; give those E-logs an honest try with an open mind. I think you'll like them within a very short time frame.

Don't blame or belittle those who have already relized this and are adapting to the change, unwanted, and unwilling. -
Lol...I have one for the elog haters...Have a delivery this morning in Federalsburg, MD..called ahead to receiver asked if I could park on site since according to the guide I carry, there are no truckstops close by. Get the ok...have about a 4hr drive with a 5.5 on the clock...knowing the Beltway traffic around DC will make or break me. Hit a little traffic but still ahead of schedule...then as I am approaching the Bay Brifge on US 50 a monsoon hits..lol..really slows traffic up, by the time I get across I am still ahead of schedule but I am getting into too close to have any more delays territory....well things go smoothly and I am going to make it with 5 minutes to spare...and then 1 mile from the industrial park...DETOUR...BRIDGE OUT...come to find out its a 14 mile detour to basically get 100 yards over the bridge to the receiver. Luckily there was a Food Lion shopping center with a couple big trucks already there. A local L/O was also in there and he said it was pefectly fine to park overnight. I still like my elogs...but for one night at least I wish I was back on paper
MNdriver Thanks this. -
