I'm curious to see how many people here who used to work a 9-5 in an office...do you ever regret driving a truck, or do you think it was the right decision?
Myself:
I've worked in the customer service industry answering phones for the last 13 years and I'm well past the burnout stage. Used to work in a union factory job (and got laid off) before that and miss being able to move around and not be chained to a desk all day. I understand it's not going to be easy, but I'm a hard worker and know how to look at the positive in most situations. (Getting yelled at by 20 people a day will teach you to learn patience real fast!) Life is too short to be doing something you hate is what I figure. No wife or kids to worry about either.

Customer service is the worst, I did that for a bit and miss it like a hole in the head. Trucking has it's own headaches but it's not those.

I was a receiving manager for a retail store for 13 years before driving.I love not being in the same building with the same people day after day.Nobody bothers me,and I don't have to depend on coworkers to help me be successful.I could never go back to a regular job.

have done store management,Quality control dept mgr,w/gov contracts. was between jobs and was offered a job driving straight truck ,over nights.
never looked back.
been lucky though, have always been regional and home on weekends. -
customer service so is NOT the worst. did both telemarketing and collections, both of which beat customer service hands down. telemarketing once for a cemetery, if you can believe that!
trucking may not make you a free man, but it will sure seem that way by comparison to any of those jobs. oh, sure, there are days when you think you must not have any hair left after you get done pulling it out, but talking to the "boss" MAYBE once a day, and the rest of the time being left completely alone? cant beat that with a stick. on the other hand, if you dont do "alone" well, you will most likely be getting fitted for a straight-jacket within 3 months. is really nice to have 1 or two other trucker friends who you can call on the phone every day or 2 to break up the monotony. -

I'm an HAVC Tech and I deal with Customers all day for the past 21 yrs. I'm beyond burnt out..
I still have 2 teens at home as soon as they graduate in (2015).. the wife and I plan on going to school and driving team then...Can't hardly wait to get on the road.. and for the most part I plan on her dealing with whatever people we have to deal with.. -
Otr is good money but is sometimes hard on a family man.
-
In the end, I went with OTR. Of course all is different if you have family and children. I worked for Avis and Sprint in customer service in between driving a taxi and a truck.
Looking back on it, I think of what could have been if I had stuck with it and maybe worked my way up. On the other hand, I should have stayed in college and got a master's degree in engineering or something.
It's all relative. Nobody's situation or experiences will be the same. What's good for the goose is not necessarily good for the gander, etc.theurge Thanks this.
