I've been doing some reading on these forums and elsewhere and I'm a bit concerned with getting into it with the IRS over being a 1099. Seems the general thought around here is that being classified 1099 as a company driver is illegal as far as the IRS and everyone else is concerned?

Ask the person that does your taxes, what records you need to keep. Don't do your federal taxes yourself, let a professional do them. $100 bucks or so is worth it, so you know you're legal.

There's some tax business in your town; make a visit and ask.
Don't turn down a potential good job until you get the facts from a tax professional.

I don't think that's true. Lots of places give you a 1099, and I'd pay an accountant that deals with truckers. You miss a lot of deductions I found out.

According to the guy I've been talking to, Izzy has only been in business with their own authority for a couple of years now.

In most cases, the IRS does consider it to be illegal.
Other things to consider about a 1099 job are:
As a w2 driver you get Social Security (FICA) deducted from your check. Your company pays a matching amount into you SS account. As a 1099, you are both the employee and the company so when you file taxes you will be paying both of them.
Unless you carry your own Workmans Comp Insurance, you won't get anything if you get hurt on the job. You also won't be eligible for Unemployment if you lose your job.

Whatever you decide to do I wish you good luck and be safe out there.

To my benefit I'm still young at age 26. I mean if the money is right I can set aside plenty to cover taxes with. I'm not so worried about unemployment or workman's comp if I stay safe and just do my job right. Mostly I'm concerned with dealing with the IRS.
