That '08 was a DPF equipped ACERT unarguably the worst POS motor ever put in a truck. The '04-'07 ACERT's are not bad motors.

Take everyone's advice, the truck is nice but truly over priced. I own a 379 and while i love it that truck does not suit your need's at all. Pulling van's with that truck even light 6 mpg will be a hard pull. I haul 50 percent over sized now with mine and my average is over 6.3 average. When i first started i bought this truck and pulled vans and refeer's. The best i could get was around 5.8-5.9. With what your going to haul and pull do yourself a favor and buy something well suited for your need's,that also appeal's to your taste. You can put / keep a lot of money per year in your pocket with the fuel you save. Take it from me even when you love the truck it SUCK'S at the pump! Especially when you know there is money you can save / keep.

I know they aren't the most fuel efficient but I have seen people on here with the 379 getting mid 7's and some getting mid 4's. Seems like a lot depends on the set up and how you drive. We have an o/o leased to us and he has a 379. He was in the low 7's and upper 6's pulling our vans with the same loads. He also has 2 volvos that do better than that but he likes the pete so he stays in it and hired 2 others for the volvos. Not sure if you read some of my other posts on this thread but I'm not going to buy that truck.

I would question his math. Unless he has a killer set up and has figured how to do it at a lot slower speed. Do you know any of his details?

O/O's claiming great mpg is very common. If he is getting that really, there must be reasons for it. Seems hard to believe doing 70mph. With a 379.

When I worked in the shop a few years ago I started on the fuel Island. We had to fuel the o/o trucks and write the mileage and gallons etc and keep up with it to turn in. So the math was done by myself and confirmed by him. Never really asked about his set up but I do know he had a pre egr cat.

Don't be so quick to want to spend your money and "rebuild" something like the rears or transmission. It is not uncommon at all for rears or transmissions to last past 1.5 million. They will tell you when they are ready for some TLC.

Hard to put this in proper context without details. His speed could be a huge factor. He could have been driving 55 to 60. Doing 7 to 7.5 mpg at 70 in a 379 just does not make sense. I would trust Wendell 79's numbers more.

MVT limits their trucks to 62.5 mph and they have aero trucks with all the gadgets.

    Speed kills mpg.

I just went over 1.5 million this week. On my 2001 volvo. D12 motor. Autoshift. Original motor, tranny, rears.

No inframe. I have replaced lots of stuff. Sometimes 2 now. Bought this as a budget truck in 2008 with 680k on it. I run light though. 40 to 45 gross sometimes low 50's.

I have to to add my 2.5 cents now, DO NOT GO TO THE PLACE IN GULF PORT, MS. They are one of the worst rip off's out there!!!! I am from New Orleans, La. Just down the road so to speak. Over the years I have ran across a number of folks that bought trucks ( not really ) because their great financing is a rip off lease. The Warranty only covers it in their shop, so if you are in Tx. And have a problem Your screwed.

As as far as the nice Red Pete it is a fine ride, but to much money, Trucking is a business, and has to be run as a business, or you will loose your rear end fast. No one has asked this question yet, have you checked the blue book price on it?? Have you talked to a bank on what they would lone you for it? Call OOIDA ask them what $62,000 worth of insurance will cost you?? Then go to the dealer and make them a cash offer based on what you learned. All they can do is turn it down, then you go find a truck just as good if not better some where else. And if your home every other night do you really need the table?? You can do your paperwork at you own kitchen table. And one more thing before you run out and get your own authority you might want to wait and see if the Morons in Washington, get the bill through to raise insurance rates from $700,000 to 4 million the cost could put you out of business before you get started. And with the crap going on in the Middle East, there is a good chance oil prices will go threw the roof, which means so will fuel prices. Not trying to pee on your dream, just food for thought. And as a O/O for 30 yrs. I wish you all the luck in the world, but I would not start out with a $62,000 used first truck.

And one more thing, down the road when you come over to the dark side, get a Step Deck, not a flatbed. You will be much more versatile.
