Wet kits come off...and I was just showing you there's lots of those trucks way cheaper and half the miles in the end it's your money...good luck

bulletproof don't let that dream truck cloud your judgement my "dream truck" is sitting at a KW dealer has been since 4 P.M. yesterday afternoon been waiting fore the jackwads to do some tests on her to see where she comes back. When she was sold to me I paid less than 40K that's for a 00 379-127 with a FACTORY 600, and a 70 bed and breakfast bunk with comparable miles. Mine had 1.39 mil when I bought it, I've got a bigger motor, bigger drivelines, better sleeper, and A LOT less on an overhaul 123k. granted I've dumped a rather large sum into my 40k truck but I wouldn't get caught dead dropping over 60 on a truck with 1.4 and 700k on an O/H especially when it was overhauled at 700k just not worth the money you can find a lot better for a lot cheaper just saying.

If you really want a fleet of 5+ trucks. I would skip this truck. It uses up too much of your starting capital. It will slow you down from getting trucks 2 and 3.
That truck is over spec'd for your automotive loads and even the flat bedding possibly. Over priced for sure.
It also puts more of your starting capital at risk. What if you wreck it. Could cost you 20k+. Lots of different trucks work for your automotive and flat bed operation.
Start thinking like a small fleet owner now, rather than like just driver #1. Your thinking like a driver. Rather than worrying about finding a dream truck. Dreams don't pay the bills.
Start thinking about this automotive deal. You need to question if this deal that forces you to run at 70mph and jump when they need you. Is such a good deal. Or at least think about ways that allow you to keep the customer happy but slow down. This could make a different truck spec more profitable.
You have posted only a few details about this contract. Would need to know more details about rate and your work week. To assess this automotive deal. Could be a good deal or bad. Depending on the details.
Your wife is going to want you home as much as possible. I am assuming since you really want that sleeper on the Pete you need to spend time away from home. Your really young. The wife is going to want you off the road as fast as possible.
That high priced Pete slows the process down and unnecessarily puts more of your startup capital at risk.
Re think using the bank also. Hang on to your cash. It helps if things get difficult. Developing a good relationship with a local bank will be very helpful in the future when you expand.
Learn to manage your financing. While it is small and easy to control. Just like hiring one driver at a time.
Your starting situation is so much better than most. Think twice about spending most of your capital all at once.
I wish you well.
Ps. with that light weight freight I would be looking to get to 8 mpg with a van. Not six. You need to slow down though.Spend time thinking about that. ImoBAYOU and BulletProof Thank this. -
$10-20k in startup reserve capital will disappear fairly quickly. Five years ago I started out with almost $15k when I bought my truck and a month later I was almost broke. I didn't pay half what you're about to for that 379 with only half the miles but there were times back then that I regretted it and wished it would go over a cliff. Emotion almost ruined me on my first truck purchase cause I wanted what I wanted. I completely understand wanting a nicer ride and am not really one of these owners who views a truck as a mere tool. I get that... that 379 is way overpriced and I hate to see someone make the same mistake I did. It's not that any of us wants to piss on your parade you just need to think really hard about the gamble you're taking when you only have $10k reserve instead of a much more comfortable $20-25k. It would be great to think you could bank 25k that first year to inframe it. I think you're being unrealistic there too. You'll be lucky if you make anything that first year.
BulletProof, paintballer and cbholister Thank this. -
If you search truck paper with the same price range 60-65k, you will find trucks that offer more. There are trucks with barely a million on them and either a fresh rebuild or recent one. The difference is that some have cummins motors which may be a problem and they are past 2003. There are some good pre 2003 trucks for less but you may sacrifice the bed and breakfast.
BulletProof Thanks this. -
I was going for 6mpg on that truck as a worse case scenario. That's how I figured my business plan. I did everything paying the least amount possible with as little miles as possible with 6mpg and $4/gal fuel to see if the numbers still work in case things go south. Pulling those loads, it should do better than 6mpg but that is just what I figured my plan with.
The wife likes me being home but she doesn't mind me being gone as long as its not weeks at a time. Here lately I've been running our regional plus runs. So I left Monday at 5am, went to Vandalia, OH and got back yesterday at 2pm. Now I'm leaving in a couple hours to go to Los Indios, TX and I'll be back around midnight friday night. She doesn't mind that at all. She understands that I'm working my butt off now so that in 10 years maybe I won't have to and she understands and appreciates that. I did mention to her the other day that once I get a truck if she didn't mind me being gone a few weeks, I could make a lot more and that was a resounding no and I can understand that. Her schedule is 3 12 hour shifts per week (that is their full time) so she has a lot of time to ride with me and she enjoys riding. The reason I want the table in the back is because it is the only thing I miss about my Volvo. It had the work station in the back and was so much easier to do paperwork, eat, read, etc on lay overs. Now, I have to sit on the bed and do all of that because these T660's don't have a cabinet or desk or anything like that. Is it a necessity? Not really. But, I would like to have one.
With banks, I don't trust them. I HATE owing money and I hate credit. I've always tried to live by the, "If I can't pay cash then I don't need it" mantra and it has served me well. Of course, there are a few things I've had to finance but I wasn't happy about it. Even with not really financing much, my credit is in the mid 700's. I've never missed a payment or been late on a payment on anything ever. I've read some people on here opened a line of credit in case something major happened but I haven't really looked in to it much. Before I was married I cashed my check, put the cash in my pocket, and kept it there for when it was needed. Since I've been married, my checks are direct deposited because my wife keeps up with all of the bills and she does a dang good job of budgeting and saving. But I still don't like the fact that I have to deal with banks. -

Here are a few others I found. Lets see what yall think.

I know these "buy here pay here" places can be the scum of the earth but they do offer a 48 mo warranty on engine/trans/rears. I have seen them advertise in the truck paper books. Says "rods, mains, liners, and pistons have been inspected and can be replaced for $995 additional". I'm assuming that is just the labor.
The only thing that absolutely scares the hell out of me is that ACERT cat.
EDIT: I called about those 3. All 3 have been sold. I asked more about the warranty and changing the bottom end. She said that when the trucks come in they inspect the rods, mains, liners, and pistons. If they feel like they need to be changed then they will do it. If not, I can request for them to change them for $995. I asked if thats just labor or parts because it seems kinda low and she said that is parts and labor and everything $995 out the door and they have a specific 1 year warranty on those. So if the truck has a 48mo powertrain warranty and I replace the rods, mains, liners, and pistons then pretty much everything on that truck will be covered for a while and that will put more money back into my company for getting a cheaper truck.
Bare with me guys. I'm slowly coming over to yalls side. The numbers keeps making sense. I hate when they make sense.Last edited: Jun 25, 2014
