Four 18-wheelers involved in fiery crash in Caldwell Co. (Caldwel Co. OEM)
CALDWELL COUNTY, Texas (KXAN) — Two people were killed when four 18-wheelers and a car crashed and burst into flames on Interstate 10 in Caldwell County near Luling, said the Caldwell County Office of Emergency Management.
It happened at about 2:45 a.m. Saturday morning on the interstate between US Highway 183 and State Highway 90.
Officials said the crash was so severe and left so much debris and damage that the westbound lanes of the interstate were shut down all day. As of 8:50 p.m. Saturday, the roadway was still closed. All four of the 18-wheelers burned to the ground and the road surfaced needed to be restored.
It happened on a section of bridge, which prompted a safety inspection by TxDOT. Engineers said the structure was still safe.
Westbound drivers on I-10 were being diverted to US 183 and SH 90.
An official with Caldwell County OEM said that there was a fog advisory in effect from the National Weather Service at the time of the crash, and fog may have played a roll in it.
He said two bodies were found at the scene and one person was taken to the hospital with serious injuries.

Obviously it’s terribly sad that some perished from this collision. But TXDOT could’ve done a lot more to warn west bound traffic. Five miles out I see a sign stating “incident ahead, use caution”, and then I-10 westbound is closed at the Luling exit. No detour signs pointing anywhere! I turned left or south on 183 and wound up in a residential area with low hanging tree branches. Several deep gouges in my the top of sleeper in my Cascadia, top of sleeper, I realize I turned wrong way at exit. I’m a born and raised Texan and am slow to criticize my home state, but it is due here. TXDOT could’ve done a lot more to inform westbound traffic about where they should go after freeway closure or at least given detour info. Or at the very least, informed traffic that the interstate was indeed closed.

Sad deal all the way around. I know exactly where you were, from the area. There's a quick right after you turned left or your in some random neighborhood. Sorry about your truck and prayers for those involved.

i know i may be wrong, but a red sports car usually equals...speeding
i have driven in fog many times. i stay in the far right lane, and go just below the speed limit, and have my 4 ways on.
can't tell you how many times, cars have zipped by me, even big rigs, or are they billy big riggers..??
must have something to prove.
i have proven that in the now nearly 40 years, i ain't had a wreck.
slower speeds, right lane, 4 way flashers.shroomhauler, Lepton1, chico9696 and 1 other person Thank this. -
Ah the joys of driving imprubently (speeding) in fog. It is all very well until they come on some one whom has slowed down. With the above the resulting factor. condolences to those whom perished.

There was another wreck in the same spot less than a week later. Sorry but I don't have a link. I only know because I live 20 minutes away from Luling.

Wow! I was only commenting on the lack of communication from TXDOT to traffic that the freeway was closed. Obviously the families of those involved in the accident are dealing with a lot and I would never mean to demean them or what there going through. But if it makes you feel like you’ve got a bigger “johnson” to leave these stupid comments, then please proceed with your rants. It was many hours after the accident, late into the night when I came through there.

Wow. Take it easy, Bucko. You read something into my post that put your boxers in a twist. Sorry if you lost a loved one in this specific accident, but I wasn't addressing the loss of life. My post spoke to the fact that all drivers are personally responsible to operate their vehicles within the limits of conditions. And you know that. Just sayin'.arrogant steve and Blackshack46 Thank this.
