Neat thing about MURS is that there's no real restriction on mobile antennas. And, unlike FRS blister-packed UHF radios, it's OK (and easy) to adapt the built-in antenna to an external gain antenna on the vehicle.
The simple expediency of a vehicle power supply for a MURS handheld, or using a commercial mobile radio (I use Motorola and Icom, because I'm used to repairing them) with a low power and narrowband option engaged on the MURS channels, gives unlimited operating time on long drives.
For a truck that's being escorted by a team of pilot cars, the handheld -- speaker mic -- cigar lighter cord -- mag mount combination is easily deployed, and gives several miles' range with nice, clear communications. And with five channels to choose from, on freqs that hardly anyone uses, you can be virtually assured of no interference.
