Will be looking for a truck for next year to put a grain box on off another truck. As far as I can tell wheel base needs to be about 280” depending on space behind cab to end of frame. What do I need to look for as far as frame strength needed? Tensile strength, thickness, height, double frame needed, etc.? New to posting on here so don’t know if there’s a sub forum I need to post this on

Lots of variables. Why not buy a used dump truck which would have tons of other uses around a farm besides grain. Truck prices are getting pretty low.

Not knowing how much you plan to haul. It's a guess. Alot that are used 4 weeks out of the year are single frames and piles of junk. Some are heavy with double frames.

You hauling 250 bushel, or 750 bushel?

Single axle tractors and steel hopper bottoms are pretty affordable also.

The box I have is around 700 bushels but normally only haul 600-650 now. The biggest reason I’m wanting to find a truck for the box is because the box is in good shape but the truck is next to junk. I also would like to stick with a 10 wheeler and box setup so I can still haul other stuff like lime, manure, rock, etc.

MIGHT be less expensive to buy an older solid sleeper truck, remove the sleeper, and stretch the frame if necessary... But I dont know what the market for those trucks is right now.

Lots of options. Your talking 35k payload. Add in what ever your empty weight is. Your probably 54-55k gross.

Single frame will do the job. You can reinforce the frame with L shape frame overlay from cab to drive axle. Tie the rear together. Probably have some flex and sway when dumping. But that would take into account locations, and your operation. Because it will probably get filled full every trip. More than do able on a single frame. Double frame would be great. Type of hoist matters. Straight cylinder, scissor hoist?

We are getting to the end of my dump knowledge. I don't like dumps, they tip over.

Never thought about straight vs scissor lift making a difference. Why is that?

Contact points. My understanding the scissor is easlier on the frame than single point cylinder.

Now that is my understanding. Maybe someone with more dump experience can add to conversation. I've never owned any. I have worked on some. But my knowledge is limited.
