Knowing the government they probably spent billions on an environmental study and determined that bumpers would interfere with the fish swimming through the channel or something stupid like that.

 

That's literally the next bridge downstream from I-40 Webber Falls bridge. This one is right downstream of a lock & dam, so most likely this was poor handling while breaking down or building the tow.

 

I remember that one. It was one helluva detour one way but not too bad the other for many months afterwards. But having been over both that and the FSK bridge that one was small potatoes by comparison.

 

If there were any political points to be scored the politicians would have made it happen - and had plenty of photo ops at the press conferences and ribbon cutting ceremony.

 

I heard on the radio today that it took the Coast Guard over 12 hours to board the ship after she crashed. Isn't that something they normally do immediately?
