I have an 07 780 with a d12 coupled to a ZF Freedomilne 12 speed. My mileage is 879k and the tranny is working fine. Smooth shifts and no codes. I sometimes, very rarely, get the mechanical splitter SM code but it's so infrequent I can't remember the last time it happened. With that said, how much of a ticking time bomb is this transmission?

I have heard that when they go wrong they are very expensive...sometimes equal to the cost of repairs on the after treatment components on an emissions truck. And finding someone with the knowledge and expertise to work on them is a problem.

Should I quit whilst I'm ahead and think about a replacement truck whilst this one is still servicable and not a paper weight ?

I had one go bad on me.Was very sudden and very expensive.I was quoted over $20k for a new transmission and install. With the mileage you have on it look for it to start needing things.Clutch is like $1500 and throwout bearing is another $1300 plus labor.I opted to just have a 13 speed put in.I liked the automatic and it was a great transmission when it worked.

I just had a Freedomline 12 speed taken out of my truck for this very same reason. I figured I would stick an 18 speed in it before it went down on me.
I spent about $11,000 on the swap.

Was the Vaseline thrown in for free? Sounds too high to me for that.

Was about the same price for mine. It's not a simple remove and replace.Probably could have been a bit cheaper if I would have gathered all the parts myself.

its not just simple Remove and Replace Because Freedomline Runs a different Flywheel and A few other things that are different. I have personally had really good experience with these transmissions i have seen them all the way up to 1.8mil and still running strong. All that was needed to change is wires. Voltage doubler and a couple of air valves. if being done properly cost all around is around 2500 the only thing that i do suggest is changing clutch at 1 mil that can get up to 3000 or 3500 other than that they are pretty good. English man if you are looking to sell truck let me know what kind of money you're looking for i have a few people around chicago that like those trucks and that trans combo. I think its one of the best around, the only difference is ive been working on them for a while and know the ins and outs pretty well.

Should have orderd the clutch for a EU supplier.OEM they retail around 1500$ but that is the complete set, bearing and fork included.Aftermarket they are much cheaper. Labor is hardly a issue as you can install them in less then 4 hours.
