Can someone tell me exactly what this helps? Carriers put in bids, and shippers already know what to do most of the time with their documents, what is a freight forwarder even needed for?

A freight forwarder is a broker, he is a middle man between you and the shipper. That usually will take a hefty fee and you never will find out what the actual load pays. People like CH robinson, FAK, etc. People who are killing the trucking business fast, but just wait a few more months.
