we have a 1992 Freightliner and are having starting issues with the batteries. Can anyone tell me which of the 4 batteries is the starter (or main) battery? Also, can anyone tell me how much a new battery costs?

All 4 will supply power to the starter.

Dont replace one, replace them all at the same time. Your old batteries will destroy a new replacement battery.
bullhaulerswife Thanks this. -
What are the issues? It won't start after it sits overnight....?
You could have a bad connection, broken or corroded wire, all sorts of things to look for. -
My 96 freightliner had 4 batteries and two hot leads from the batteries to the starter.I had one of the ends on one of the main leads break off once and it wanted to turn slow. Then i fixed the end.

on my 97 dump freightliner 2 of my batt. was hook to the starter and the other 2 was hook to the acc. but i did buy a cable to hook them all together and replaced all..

Definitely replace the batteries as a set even if you only have one bad. Around here they run about $100 each.

I appreciate all the input guys but here's the deal. We just bought the truck (it's a big dump for hauling asphalt) last week. When we bought it, it started right up. We had our diesel mechanic there to look at it. I drove it. We failed to actually look at the batteries at that time. When we picked it up the weather was cold (in the teens) and it wouldn't start. We tried jumping it with another smaller truck, didn't work. We finally decided that we would pull all 4 batteries, take them home and hook them up to the charger, warm them up and then see if it would start. When we pulled them that's when we noticed that 3 of the 4 batteries had green stickers on the side that said "BAD Battery". All of our money is tied up in the truck and fuel so $400 is hard to pull together right now. We thought we could try to replace 1 a week. Do you think it will work? We did replace one battery (it was $100) and the truck did start. We know we should replace them all together but we're just getting started with our own truck and didn't expect this right off the bat.

the problem with not replacing all the bad batteries is that one could be shorted out. a shorted out battery will draw the rest down. if you can plug it in at night it should start off two batteries. but one shorted out battery will ruin the others.

Autozone will check each bat free.At least you'll know for sure which ones are bad and you should leave them off like FYDA said.
