I have a strong suspicion you are right. I will call you, maybe we can speak tomorrow. They have closed up for the weekend. I am still here boiling in my truck. I am super grateful for the interest and the offer.
The mechanic sort of makes nice but you can tell he wants to forget about this job and resents my finally stepping in. I backed off for the longest time, deliberately, I just endured listening to nonsense being spoken regarding the electrical stuff. I am being somewhat ignored. Politely.
I got up at 4:30 this morning and started researching. I paid on the internet to talk to a Freightliner service manager. I needed to know exactly the sequence of events that have to take place to make this solenoid activate.
I originally thought that conditions that have to be met for the ECM to issue a trigger high to the relay, thus supplying the solenoid, were not being met.
However the F/L guy said that if either the accessory or ignition relays were inactive I would not be able to start the engine and a host of things wouldn't work.
So I have dismissed that idea.
I favor exposed rubbing wires SOMEWHERE between the relay and the solenoid.
I need the pit.
They are not going to let me use it alone.
They are buried in work.
I have a seriously strong knowledge of electronics. It was my bread and butter for 35 odd years. I know about thinking sideways when it comes to this stuff and the fact that sometimes you have to break out a razor blade and start to gently trace wires back to the source.
Tons and tons of this is black box.
They just do not want to give away so called proprietary information. Even if it isn't !!
I am very worried about this situation. Your help is very welcome as I am facing a brick wall.

if you have knowledge of electronics give me a call and i will be able to have you find the problem dont need the pit just need to get a little dirty up to you its a very simple system that everyone makes very complicated being that it is a little bit old and a lot of people have forgot about it but it is truly a very very simple system.

Well thanks to forum member nasriza I am up and running. Yesterday I lashed up a work around from parts I had on the truck and I am able to move.
A 12v supply was taken on a line from the battery connection on the fuse box. That line is feeding 2 x single pole single throw switches that I temporarily mounted in an old dollar store plastic storage tray.
The output side of each switch has been tapped into the hot side of each range select solenoid.
nasriz warned me that there would be dire consequences if I do not take care shifting but so far I have been fine.
It is cumbersome but it works.
I am going to Hammond, IN. Once delivered I shall hook up with him and we can fix this lashup back to factory.
I have just got off the phone with the service manager at the shop in Alexandria. He was obviously scared that I was going to leave him hanging. I assured him I am not going to do that. If you have no honor you have nothing.
He was reasonable and we are going to thrash out fair compensation.
I will continue letting everyone know how this plays out.
Dave_in_AZ and thaistick Thank this. -

I'm a commercial electrician. I hate fooling with electrical on the truck.
Mostly because I don't know where to look for things, and there's no room. -

I can't wait to get this buttoned up. The noise and heat coming up from that hole is horrible.
