The vast majority of us wouldn't even want to throw poo in the direction of any company in Chicago.

 

What? I'm surprised. Usually those companies owned by the Russians and Eastern Europeans are honest and pay for all miles. They have to, so they can make sure to get that escrow.

 

I have worked for one Russian, run out of Texas. He is the only guy I think I would want to drive as a company driver for again over the road period. Not that we didn't ever have our issues, he did short my pay a few times but because his dispatchers never told him about my detention. Once he knew I was shorted he corrected it right away. He didn't do none of that escrow junk either. You'd thought he was a Texan, though he wasn't.

 

I worked for a fella from Eastern Europe, and while he did do all that shady stuff, it wasn't all bad. I never had a short check and he did do right by me. The way they lie to brokers and get money from drivers, yes that can be annoying and I knew I'd be screwed. As a temporary solution, it worked nicely

 

I agree. I'm shocked, I tell you, shocked, by the inferrence of dishonesty in the Chicago market.

FOR FUTURE DRIVERS THINKING OF SIGNING ON TO A 1099 COMPANY IN CHICAGO: if you go up to work in Chicago, make sure you don't leave empty handed. Get an Italian beef sandwich.

 

pay and miles affects escrow? what is escrow used for in a trucking company to buy new trucks or something?

 

It's a fleece-purchase tactic. It's supposed to help pay for the low weeks and emergency repairs. Anymore, it's just a down payment that no one ever gets back for a truck the driver will never own. Megas do this, too. Only they use legal cover. If a truck is turned in (even if switching to another at end of lease), every scratch, dent, and loose bolt comes out of the escrow. Need cleaning? That, too. Anything left (and there never is) is either given back to the driver or applied to the new lease. You know, for that huge but always elusive balloon payment if ya wanna "buy" the truck.

Before anyone says that's what the maintenence fund is for....what maintenance fund? Tires and PMs use all that nearly as soon as it accumulates. Ain't any cheaper to do it at a terminal than at TA or Love's. Breakdown on the road and need a tow? Got supers so it's a road call rather than limping to the next shop? Lights start flickering or burnt out? Red lines leaking in the AM at a mountaintop rest area? All gone! And then some. Need more cash to cover in a pinch? Escrow. Maybe. If they're nice that day.

Big and small companies know most will never complete a lease OR never complete the 3 or 4 leases required to actually buy a tractor. So these days, it's a huge income boost, nothing more.
