couple of things you need to know. Just because P&P gives you permission to leave the state doesn't mean you can and nobody will say anything.
I have a federal level felony from '92, I got my CDL in '97. I've been lucky, I bounced between 4 companies before I found this one, and even then it was a trying process. I've been with one company since Nov. '97, I'm senior driver, and have 1.4 mil. exp. That doesn't mean squat getting on with some of the larger carriers, I've been told by one that I have too much exp. for them. I've been told by others that even with all my exp. they still won't hire with a felony, although I've shown a couple the error of their ways that they cannot just deny becuase of a felony, they to have a proveable reason.
That said, somethings you need to know:
1. Yes you can get a TWIC
2. Yes you can get a passport, but it has to be 2 yrs from release from paper before you can apply. I don't care what P&P tells you, BTDT.
3. You cannot go into Canada on business without a ministers permit. The process to get a ministers permit is long and arduous. They are getting very strict on issuing them as well, and you will have to keep you nose 150% clean if they issue it. You also have to be off paper 5 yrs before you can apply for it. Even travelling to Canada for pleasure can be a hassle, I've been Niagra Falls twice since my conviction, but, each time, it's been questionable at the border.
4. You can be customs bonded once your 5 yrs off paper, but even this can depend on the carrier.
5. Insurance companies only generally care about criminal records if it involves motor vehicles; DUI. But since your beyond the 3 yrs most require you MAY be ok on that one.
6. While on paper, I will guarentee, you will hasseled by DOT in many states, especially TX, NE, CO, NV, CA. Even once your off paper NV can be a problem. Oh and forget about visiting a casino in NV, your not welcome without a Convicted Persons Registration card. If you gamble in a casino without one and win any amount that requires you to fill out the IRS paperwork, they also notify LVPD, they will run you. If you don't have the card, you forfeit the cash and you'll be back in steel braclets being booted out of town. Also, once you have that card, if your planning to spend any time, even on business in Vegas, you have to notify LVPD upon arrival.
7. The companies you will be applying to are definetly going to be bottom feeders and they will abuse you.
8. Personally, I would try to find a Mom/Pop company that will take a chance on you, but given how recently your Possession conviction is, even they are going to be hesitant.
9. As for those "old timers" who you met in prison with CDL's, 100 to 1 those licenses are expired and they probably won't be back driving. It's getting harder.big_rig_ambition, aiwiron, bulletproof77 and 2 others Thank this. -
Excellent post, Striker.
This thread is going deeper than the typical "I just got out of jail" thread. Ambition has quite obviously got some sharp gray matter and a firm determination.
And to Big Rig Ambition....I genuinely wish you well. I'll be most interested in hearing of your progress. :smt023 -
where do i start??
hmm well big rig ill start with this. I was in your shoes 20 plus years ago. matter of fact i learned had to drive in a 2yr live in rehab i was in.
a place called( delancey street) you do in fact have a hard road ahead of you. first thing for any personal interviews you might go on you really need to change your aperance ( yeas i know i can't spell worth a ####,lol ) mainly because u allready look so bad on paper. get rid of the facial hair, get a clean hair cut and even change your manner of dress. you'll also need to remove any street slang form your vocabulary. also street mannerisums. just a little back ground on me,
i was nothing but a two bit junkie thief 77-88 i have a felony record as tall a i'am all from theft to support a drug habit allthough i do'nt have any drug charges in 88 i was lookn at 15 to 25 with enhancments thats when i got lucky and got into delancey street thanks to my parole agent ive have been trucking since i left in 1990 trust me when i say the whole personal apperance thing will have a big affect not to all but a lot, even in trucking. i would even check with your parole agent and see if there is a program in your area to get those tats of your knuckles for free and any other visable ones as well. i have seen on tv where doctors have provided this service to help gang members who want outa the life not to say u have any afilliation. (lol) the biggest problem u have though is your charges are so recent,as posted companies have limits (time frame on convictions anywhere from 7-10 in the past) major hurddle for u!!! i have a very important phoen call will conttinue post shortly byeMekanic, big_rig_ambition and mtnMoma Thank this.
