J&R Schugel, TransAm, U.S. Express, Werner, Stevens, Out of these companies who would you go with first to get your foot in the door, and experience? I also have roehl and Schneider but im keeping them in my pocket for down the line when I have experience. Any type of info will help...I've seen alot of stevens, werner, and us express threads about how bad the companies are so im trying to stay away from them.....uhhhhg:biggrin_25524:

Schneider would be a Great start. I had a friend work there for many years and they really liked it. And they take students. just keep one thing in mind,.. LONGETIVITY.... don't jump from company to company, every Company has it's ups and downs, and they all pick up and deliver to the same customers, fuel at the same truck stops, and sleep in the same rest areas. I started out at JB Hunt 23 yrs ago, and wish I never quit because they're all the same just different colors. Good Luck !!!

J&R Schugel, TransAm, U.S. Express, Werner, Stevens...yeah right like we all worked for them. Not to mention that some drivers for each of those companies get good miles, while others don't. Hence, the answer is it depends. Moreover, much of the crap you read on here is exaggerated BS written by people that blame the companies for their own personal failures. Regarding the companies you listed, all of them are about the same. However, be careful of TransAm as they will try to finagle newbies into leasing their trucks. You shouldn't even consider leasing a truck until you have at least a couple of years experience under your belt.

I would recommend checking out the different threads on each of companies and forming your own opinion on each of them. Just keep in mind that most of these authors are employees or former employees who may have had an issue or a pending issue with that carrier. Also keep in mind those companies which hire student drivers will tend to have more complaints due to the fact most new drivers come into the industry with a lot of misconceptions and crazy romantic ideas about the industry which are fueled by trucking schools, trucking companies, media, and even experience drivers. When new drivers hit the road these misconceptions and ideas are quickly shattered leaving them bitter and feeling betrayed. Most of that bitterness tends to be directed at those carriers which hire drivers with less than 2 year experience.

I never work for any of the companies you list but from what I can see on the road and out in about U.S.X. and Trans Am appear to have the better equipment of the 5 you listed.

Never do any of these and you'll be ok:

    1) Never do drugs.
    2) Never drink 10 hours before driving
    3) Never drive when your mad or emotional
    4) Never drive when your out of hours or the vehicle is out of service
    5) Never quit under a load
    6) Never attend a truck driving school offered or sponsored by a trucking company
    7) Never lease a truck from a trucking company
    8) Never allow a lot lizard in your truck
    9) Never stop keeping in contact with family and friends
    10) Never joke with the Border Patrol about firearms, alcohol, or illegal aliens.

Unless you have something specific in mind after you have enough driveing experience, you can make the miles with those companies.

The biggest downfall of them is; 1 they push lease purchase
2 most want you to run team. ( which is ok if you want that)
3 they tend to be tougher on their saftey, logs etc than some other companies.

We have a friend ( son of our friends really) that is working for Swift, til he gets the experience he needs for a "Local" company to pick him up. It's all about the insurance really. They won't hire him til he has 2 yrs driveing experience.

What I'm saying is they are alot alike, most ppl will take the time to gripe about something, but they won't to praise it. My husband ( and their for I, since i get on the pc) will give a very good reveiw of Melton, we both think they are overall a really good company to work for "we", just had some issues that no one else may ever run across with them. We heard others really gripe about them, not getting the miles, etc, the normal things you hear. If you started asking questions, you found out why they weren't getting the miles and it wasn't the companies fault.

Just find the company that offers YOU, the best opportunity and gives YOU the things you want most. Maybe you loose 1c per mile with a company that has better insurance. Everyones different. The best company for you may not allow riders, wouldn't work at all for my husband, as we have no "home" per say.

If you prove your reliability by always being on time and doing whatever your manager asks, you will get all the miles you can legally handle.

If your on time performance is lacking, and have a ready excuse for everything that happens, you'll soon find yourself only getting crap loads and low miles. Seriously, your FM doesn't care that you're late because you chose to go through LA at 4 PM for a 7 PM appointment in San Diego. Especially not when you've just taken a 3 hour fuel stop on the Grapevine.
