    Hello drivers/Owner operators.

I used to be a HHG truck owner but got tired of it and went to drive as a company driver, 6 months car hauling with H&A. (Bad money and lots of lies) and since August I’m a driver for a small CA company. (I’m from Florida)

    My business plan.

1)I own a Volvo 780 so no truck payments.
2)Capital, about $10000 cash and $25000 in Credit cards.
3)did all my research about whatever needed as far as insurance (I know I’m going to get raped being from Florida)
Permits, fuel cards, load boards etc.
4)12 years driving experience and clean record (past 5 years)

    My question:
Still thinking of going with my own authority or lease on to a company.
If the gurus thinks a lease is better so please recommend me a good company to lease on to, dry van loads and I’m flex on location as I’m planing to fly home for my off time as Florida won’t pay and I won’t haul cheap.

Thanks for your respond and time reading this.

    David.

Leasing onto a carrier takes some weight off your shoulders (less paperwork, for example), but it comes at a cost. Getting your own authority gives you lots of freedom (no company policies), many opportunities to grow in business, better pay (eventually), more flexibility in routes, but also requires lots of money to start, higher responsibility as an owner of a trucking company, risk losing thousands if you fail, and so on.

You could always lease on to someone for a while, make sure your truck is okay ( I assume it's been sitting for awhile), save some money, and then see where you are at.

    Rideandrepair and Davidsti1 Thank this.

With 10k capital I would probably lease it to a company that pays by percentage that you can pick your own loads, like landstar. That will give you more of a cushion on tire discounts, big fuel discounts from the start, payed every week, after a while they will loan you money if need be, and here’s a big one for you- no trailer rental fee.

Then as you work that you can get things in a row for your own authority maybe. Or you might just stay if you like it.

I don’t know if you live in Florida or how deep in Florida , so leasing to a local company might secure more Florida freight but it would probably be a set rate per mile which I usually frown upon.

    Just my thoughts

Landstar wants you to believe that to use their company’s dry vans, there is no trailer rental fee. The rental fee has been worked into the percentage of the load they will pay you. I see it as a business strategy to get more people to sign up. Currently, using Landstar’s dry van will get you 65% of the load. If you bring your own trailer, you will get 72% of the load.

It may seem like I don’t like Landstar, but not at all. Landstar has to be one of the most legit carriers to lease onto. I wish I had leased onto them when I started.

You could go step or flat with landstar. Are you south or north Florida? There are chemical companies up north.

I’m South Florida. I have no experience at all with flatbed or stepdeck.
