whats up guys. i went with werner after i graduated and i was out for a month with my trainer. my trainer said i was ready to be on my own but company policy was going to make me stay out for another 3 weeks..well i dont like the way the company works anyways so i took my pto time and called watkins..they told me i only have to train for 10 days..this looks good to me because you go broke on the crap training pay..and i feel if the trainer thinks im ready they shouldnt keep me broke because of policy. so im going with watkins..my only concern is in that 10 days can you learn what you have to know about the company in that ime period?? like werner has there fuel book so you can only fuel at certaint spots and stuff like that..is 10 days long enoug for me to learn all those little corks about the company like that?? and what there procedures are for splits and swaps and all that junk..and are the macro's for the qualcomm going to be different?? am i just being over dramatic about this situation or is there info you guys can help me on?? thanks guys..turn n burn!!

Thanx to this forum, I've put Werner, Swift, Covenant and England on my bottom feeders list. On the very top shelf is Watkins Sheppard, also partly since I'm near one of their most busy terminals. I put in an app today myself. Swift called from an app I put in long ago, but I thought they had a hiring freeze on anyway.
Running out of time and now out of money; I'm gonna have to do something soon. Hope it's Watkins.

You'll get plenty of training in the 10 days. Don't let the length fool you.

You spend 6 weeks on a truck with a "so-called" trainer. Who may spend a couple of hours a day actually teaching you something.

At W&S, they will be teaching you something....all day long.

Yeah I was worried about going to W/S because of the training period...I mean how do the teach you all the in and outs on the road...? I know that once you get on the road, you will pick up things on your own, but what about all the little tricks you need to know about? They say that they believe in their training and it works. I'm going to call monday moring and talk to Roxy...thanks everyone

They're going to teach you basic survival skills. You'll pick up the little tricks as you go. Some in school, others after school.

Even I learn something new every day. There is no way, you can learn it all. Even if they trained you for a year.

Don't let the length of training fool you.

Yeah I can understand that. I've heard they throw a lot at you in 10 days...No worries though, cause I'm up to learning as much as I can everyday...:biggrin_255:
    Thanks for your help...

From the sound of it, they really teach you to handle the truck in that month...but many quit for some reason; probably those who just don't have it. They also seem to prefer drivers with some type of experience, but not always. And you're training in snow and on ice.
Final point is, I doubt there ever will be any "school" that can teach you trucking. That comes by time and experience only, and nowadays your mistakes can get you fired rather than corrected. I doubt that my 9 former years driving will qualify me to not ever make mistakes; they happen. I think what counts is the size of the mistake. If you're prone to doing really stupid things you shouldn't be driving trucks at all.
Still, it's a bit of a mystery not requiring a "trainer" driver session/probation for total noobs. Were they MY trucks, you dang sure better bet I'd not allow that. But it's none of my business; I can drive.

I agree. You have to have some type of knack for this thing. I got behind the wheel of a truck and it just felt comfortable and right. I've heard stories about guys leaving their training but maybe this wasn't for them...Heck there were people in my class that I would have bet money that they wouldn't be able to drive a truck...they passed but I would not get in the passenger seat with them.:biggrin_2551:
