Question, does the alcohol in air line work only if used prior to the trailer freezing or does it matter? Also, I just pour a little liquid rubbing alcohol in the air line or some other type of alcohol? I just picked up a new loaded trailer and tandem pins still go in and out using air pressure but my brakes will not work at all on trailer. Even disconnected emergency line and the trailer kept rolling. I also wonder if it could be another problem, as the last time I had a frozen air line the pins were stuck but the brakes worked fine.

If the supply (emergency) line is disconnected and the trailer still rolls, the spring brakes aren't working.

You need more help than should be given here.

Adding "air brake anti-freeze" is what you need and YES it will melt a blockage.

Don't use rubbing alcohol>it eats rubber components in valves.

If you have the supply disconnected and the trailer still moves check the brake chambers to see if they are "caged".

Try putting the alcohol in the service then hook it up and go in truck release brakes and pump the foot brake several times

If the brakes are caged, there will be a bolt with a nut protruding from the hole in the center of the brake chamber that normally is covered with a rubber or plastic plug. It would have to be on all 4 chambers if on a tandem axle trailer unless it is a really old trailer not equipped with spring brakes, but those are almost never seen anymore.

i'm willing to bet the brakes have never been adjusted.

you can hear the trailer air up. if the line was frozen. you'd push the valve in and hear no air going into the trailer at all.

Do like Ralph said and use air brake anti-freeze. Remove the glad hands from the trailer and fill the lines up the best you can and re-hook to the trailer. Then cycle your brake buttons a few times. You might have to repeat a couple times. Rubbing Alcohol will not only eat on seals it is made with mostly water. What happens when the alcohol evaporates? It sounds like the valve on the backside of the back tank that has about 6 lines hooked to it. But trying to decipher which valve it is redundant. Treat and thaw is your cure. Always carry a bottle of that stuff with you. You might even get it from your shop.

The other scenario is someone dropping a trailer with wet shoes that freeze to the drums. Then you get out there and beat with a hammer being careful to hit the drum flat from the back side. The vibration will crack the ice.

I actually pulled one 8 years ago,it was 1962 Freuhauf fuel tanker used at that time to haul water.

A guy I know took a chamber apart without caging it and the spring threw the removable piece at him so hard that it almost killed him. Newer chambers aren't serviceable that way,you can't change a leaking gasket, and have to replace the chamber.
