    Hello all,

I am thinking about being an owner operator, just watching from the sidelines for now while working my main full time job.

    Question please:

With fuel cost increasing making my fuel expense higher, should the rates on Truckstop go up as well so truckers can make money? Does brokers increase their rates or remain the same regardless of rising fuel cost?

From your experience, how does a owner operator adjust for raising fuel cost?

Thank you so much for the help and support.

First of all, truckstop doesn’t establish the freight rate. You do! If your cost are higher your rate should reflect that.

RefMata, Eddiec and trucker_lady80 Thank this.

Your loads should have a fuel surcharge with the rate. That will increase/decrease based on the national average. You should have already seen that in your year out there.

    Hello Bumper Jack,

Thank you so much for the response.

    Question:

So if someone calls me with a load to deliver for rate of $2, and the rate I need (adjust for due to rising fuel cost) is $2.50, I can tell the person give me $2.50, right? or say No?

Because if I take $2, I will lose.

Should rate reflect an increase in fuel price, yes. Will they, maybe for a little bit until freight starts drying up.

I'm going to give you the best advice I can based on your question.
SELL YOUR TRUCK NOW OR GET OUT OF WHATEVER LEASE YOU SIGNED!!
Asking that kind of question now after you said you already are an "owner operator" means you were nowhere near ready to make the plunge.
Get out now and just be a company driver until you at least learn basic business skills.
Not being mean, just being realistic.

This can’t be a serious question. It seems like you have asked this same question a few times. Talking to a broker is a negotiation. Never ever ever take the first offer. If nothing more than sheer principle. Never ever ever be afraid to ask for what you want. Fact is I suggest asking for more than you want. You can choose to say no outright, but I suggest making a counter offer. But never be ashamed to ask for what you want. Even if it’s double what they offer.
