Fuel filter. Do I need to change it? DD15

Yeah, I was talking to the mechanic at the yard where I park my truck and he said he thought it be fine for me to do my own oil change but did not recommend me doing the fuel filters. He said if you don't do it right you could set yourself up for a real mess.
