So right now i do my fuel surcharge by the mile The majority of the industry uses around $1.25 for the base, that probably needs to change cause I don't believe we'll ever see $1.25 fuel again.
    Fuel Efficiency = 5.5 mpg
Current Fuel Price = $3.90 per gallon
Base Fuel Cost = $1.25 per gallon
    Total Miles = 800
That comes out to be $.48/mile = $384

But some people use a percentage how do you get that number seems like my customers like the percentage more than by mile but not sure how to come up with that number?

The purpose of fuel surcharge is to compensate you for the difference between today's fuel price and $1.25. Trust me, you don't want them to ratchet that number up.

For our BCO's I calculate it both ways and usually give them the higher paying of the two, which typically comes out to be the cpm way versus percentage.

They like the % basis because the lower the rate the lower the FSC.

My carrier uses a flat % based on national diesel prices adjusted quarterly. Right now it's 33% of the gross.

There is no good way to create a FSC based on percentage. It exists that way because that was the old school (steel hauler) way of doing things. Fuel cost does not vary with the line haul rate. In other words, your fuel cost is the same whether the base rate is 1.00, 2.00 or 3.00 per mile. I agree that the mileage FSC is harder for customers to understand. However, it is worthwhile to explain it to them. The calculation you used in the OP is simple and easy to understand.

This customer I have explained it to them but someone else bills them that way so that's what they want I'm trying to not shoot myself in the foot had a broker today tell me if I come out with $.50 a mile cut that in half and use 25% if it's $.40 a/mile go 20% but when I do that math it's high if I go with that my base rate would have to drop but if fuel drops I'd be in a bad spot so there is math behind it I just need to find out how

I have something else to ask lsagentozr his pm box is full

The key to figuring out a % based FSC would be looking at your average rate per mile with the customer.
