I get what your saying but I'm with a 100% owner operator fleet.

I know a driver that bought a used truck from an owner-operator.
He went to the guys house to look at the truck. It had a boat bilge pump mounted on the catwalk behind the sleeper.
He asked the truck owner about that. He laughed and said it's for stealing fuel.
Nice truck otherwise, so he bought the truck then removed the bilge pump.
The bilge pump wasn't one of the tiny ones; this one was powerful.

Locking fuel caps won’t deter thieves. They’ll just drill your tanks out then you’ve got bigger problems to deal with. Be wary where you park.

Indeed. I posted an article a few months back where a couple of perps were nailed in California for stealing fuel. They had a Econoline van with bulk liquid containers in the cargo area filled up with stolen fuel!

    Locking fuel caps are worse.

If they really want your fuel aluminum is very soft. They'll just drill a hole or holes in your tank and let it run.

Then you're not just out the tank of fuel you're out the actual tank itself.

Well, I guess I'll have to start brainstorming a non-lethal booby trap design...lol

That makes more sense than some guy with a length of garden hose and a 5 gallon can. Can you imagine it...you wake up because the truck moved a little and you look outside. There stands some dummy with a hose and a can and he's taking your fuel cap off. Pretty obvious, no? Unless he's right next to you and can siphon directly from truck to truck it's going to be a slow process. And messy. You know you'll spill some. Plus if you startle him when he's first starting he might get a good slug of diesel down his throat and you'll get to watch him puke all over his shoes.

A few years back we had a driver that was selling fuel. He drove one of our fuel tankers and he'd sell out of the truck fuel tanks and replace it with cargo while he unloaded. He made some custom fittings and little hoses and it worked pretty good. He worked nights hauling diesel into our card locks. He started small and probably would have gotten away with it if he hadn't gotten greedy. After awhile he was stealing a couple of hundred gallons every night and the inventory numbers started to not add up.
We hired a security company to watch him and in a week they had video with sound and witness statements. We sat him down with the local sheriff's investigator and he fessed up. We figured he'd hit us for at least seven thousand gallons over the course of a year. He wasn't a bad guy but he'd developed a gambling addiction. The judge gave him six months and restitution . We never saw any restitution.
I don't know what happened to him after he got out of jail but we never got a request to verify employment from anybody so maybe he quit driving.

I have had locking fuel caps for decades as well as locking Def cap since the Def caps came out. Surprised more trucks don’t have them. I have very little trust in my fellow human being.
