I can not guaranty that the fills are always synthetic in the gears, but if you buy new there is a build sheet that comes with the truck and it would tell you.
I am a firm believer in doing plug swaps on all the gear cases every so often to be sure everything is good. Buy one magnetic drain plug and do a quick swap, inspect the plug, clean it and do the check plug, clean it, and carry on. Especially before the warranty is set to expire. Many a truck comes in after the warranty expires and there is a problem that he has had for a while but was to busy to bring it in. Then he complains when he pays. -
I have magnetic drain plugs in every thing, oil, trans, & rears all fittings, where you you drain & where you fill, though I had to buy them. I also liked the ones where it has a square end & not the one whwre it takes a 1/2 ratchet to get out. if it strips you could be in trouble, if someone else sevices your truck & over tightens. at least the square type you have something to grip onto

Gee, so they did a big study on rigs like long and short haul. Synthetic gave better efficincy by like 4% all the way around. This large scientific (should be unbiased) study showed synthetic oil way better than conventional: http://papers.sae.org/801345/
howstuffworks also tells that you save in increased intervals, wear and gas for cars hehe: http://auto.howstuffworks.com/synthetic-conventional-motor-oil.htm
k, with my first check im ordering amsoil 30gal synthetic oil drumi got an old crappy 1999 freightliner. been using conventional oil since i got it 7 months ago

Well, I would like it if JohnP3 would carry his contentions over to the www.bobistheoilguy.com website and discuss it in the forums there. There are many oil professionals and petroleum engineers there that might be able to clarify what might have happened with the alleged situation he encountered, and I would like to know why it might have happened also. Those guys there have been involved in thousands of engines worth of testing, and have ongoing tests being done as we speak, and maybe they can clear this all up for all of us. I am sure John would like to know why any synthetic gave such a negative result when the vast majority of folks have the opposite effect. John if you decide to do it, provide us the link to the discussion at the BITOG website so we can all learn what happened. Until then, I will continue to use the Schaeffer synthetic I am using. Still haven't gotten that smooth gel in the top of the head thing you experienced, and oil samples still look pretty good. Will keep looking for any anomaly.

The test was done under full scrutiny of Schaeffer's engineering department, I was not involved with the original decisions. I was involved with the mounting and plumbing of the spinners. I thought it was a great idea. They proved me wrong, I do not know weather they were using these units, as a test mule for a certain additive or lack of.
I was involved with a test Shell, did in the 70's on Detroit's, I learned a lot from listening to him and having him explain what they were looking for. We never got any feed back from Schaeffer's, after the meeting they just left, the never tried to explain why the bearings using their oil were the worst of the group. They would not even come out and look at the internals of the engine they never looked at the gell, I said at the meeting, that Bob Goode was being played, he allowed 6 trucks to be used and as far as I saw I would have slapped the both of them, they were a total waist of skin.
It did not cause any long term damage to the engines. after shiming the liners up to .006 they all lasted 1.4 million hauling chips and another million, hauling hay.
This was done in the early 90's, I still believe that changing the oil is the cheapest overhaul you will not need,
Just a thought!serozhah Thanks this.
