Im new to the trucking industry and im currently out with a trainer for TNT. Im a huge Gamer and Computer enthusiast that is looking into building a gaming rig that could be used in a truck without bring the truck to its knees. Im curious how well the APU's work in these trucks and what type of inverter would be needed to run a 870watt Computer. Can it even handle that much power and will it use a ton of fuel vs just standard truck appliances? What type of ideas or suggestions coul,d you guys give me. any ill affects that i should be worried about with that type of power draw?

any help or sugestion in this matter would be greatly appreciated.

I am not sure about how well the truck can handle the power load but I am thinking that it will struggle especially if you add a monitor on top of it. The other thing you need to factor in is the reliability and speed of any internet connection you will be on in a truck stop. Expect some lag.

First of all, I would be very surprised if your computer ever drew 870W. Even if it did, that would be peak. Average would be more like 500 Watts. Even so, you would probably want a 1000 watt inverter to drive it. I don't know the capacity of Prime's APUs, but I doubt that a 500 watt average will be a problem for them.

Second, do you really need 3 graphics cards? Remember that you are probably limited to 1920x1200, since you don't have room for that 30 inch monitor. Also, keep in mind that 200 fps is useless with an LCD monitor; LCDs usually have a fixed 60 Hz frame rate.

Also, remember that space is a premium. You will probably want to build a mATX size computer for in your truck.

That said, I plan on having a gaming it capable truck computer myself. These are some of the things that I have come up with in doing my own research.

ya i wasnt planbing on using 3 gpus lol. that would be over kill. looking at a 690 which draws 400 watts and haswell cpu which draws only 70watts. i did forget to factor in the monitors power draw though. and il be using my 4G phone for any gaming use as iv seen some speeds in excess of 20+/10+ mbps (Down/Up). and the case im aiming on getting is a Corsair Carbide Series® Air 540. perfect for either a standard ATX or mATX. Been modding for a while, just never took great detail in power draw.

thx for the tips and suggestions guys. keep em coming, maybe i forgot somthing else thats crucial.

Id be surprised if you had time for gaming. I just have a dvd player in my truck and I MIGHT turn it on once every three or four days. Im usually running hard and at the end of the day I shower eat and goto bed and Im rolling at the end of my 10.

well im looking at doing the NE region and im told ur not run as hard out there by my trainer. atlleast they wont use all ur hours. and from what iv nticed so far iv had about 1-2 hours down time during loading or unloading on average. i figured if i have time then great if not then its not a big deal.

Save the space, get tour self a gaming laptop with a strong graphics card...my rig is a 17 inch Sony with a I7 sandy bridge, 8 gigs of ram, and a 1 tb hard drive, and it has plenty of power to run any game that's out there...I can also run adobe production suite and she dosent miss a beat with photo shop, premier pro and after effects running on my 27 inch monitor at home, or on my trainers tv in the truck....what I need is an affordable internet solution though 2 gigs a month on ny phone ain't enough

Oh also, if you plan to be a trucker, plan to be sleeping most of the time when you're trainers driving. There is a lot of downtime out here to play games, but you have to prioritize getting rest, which means getting rid of some of the tech
